That's obviously not a potential hour record bike, but it's also not legal for use in British time trials under CTT regs, or international ones under UCI regs. I know he revels somewhat in his 'maverick' status, but being told by the start timekeeper to go home and fix your bike isn't 'maverick', it's stupid.

I think it's a training bike. I'm pretty sure he's the kind of guy that knows the rules and does everything he can within them.
Or, didn't he do some bike radar promo thing where you could ride around a race track to beat his time? Maybe it was setup for that?

I'm pretty sure he's the kind of guy that knows the rules and does everything he can within them.
He got DQ'd from a time trial a few years ago for too-narrow handlebars, and he has got away with riding illegal bikes in CTT events thanks to the absence of scrutineers, so either he doesn't know the rules or he deliberately, and sometimes successfully, sets out to cheat.
I gather he's a decent bloke, and I admire both his athletic achievements and some of his innovative ideas about equipment and positioning, but he has always suffered from a lack of oversight by a competent outsider, probably because he is such an ornery bugger that nobody wants the job, and he won't ask.

I thought that the bike in the articles was the one that he used at that Bike Radar Donington day?
Edit: Just realised that that was in hippy's links.

We all know the rules can be subject to interpretation. Look at the confusion over the UCI's current TT hardware rules. Anyway, so far as I can tell, this bike was used for a non-sanctioned 'fun' race so he could probably do whatever he wanted.

Hippy- you haz DVD?
-
• #160
I wouldn't say poor, but book is better
-
• #161
Read the book a month or so ago.
-
• #162
The book is better. It's easier to get people to watch a dvd than read a book.

If I had to look down that cleavage every lap, I'd need to adjust my saddle
Not everyone would have been interested in that.

What the hell? (at the Sun, rather than Obree).
-
• #165
Obree *did *sell them the exclusive. He would and should have known what to expect from the Sun... Which for me troubles his 'legend' status far more than the fact that he is gay.
Anyway-hope it can draw a line under the issue for him and he can move on to happier times, he's had more than his fair share of upset and problems in his life.

Its interesting to see how different papers have approached the story. Some a little less sympathetic than others (unsurprisingly).

Seeing as this is the longest Obree thread, I thought I'd repost this here:
This below from Intelligence Squared:
"'a premier debating forum based in London, as I thought you and your fellow Southwark Cyclists members would be interested in our forthcoming “Cycling festival”on September 8th, 2011. We will be hosting a series of talks from various people with a keen interest in cycling from professional cyclist and Olympian Graeme Obree to novelist, commentator and keen amateur Will Self. There is more information and tickets available on the IQ2 website: http://www.intelligencesquared.com/events/cycling and the event will also be live-streamed. Do not hesitate to get in touch with me if you would like more details." Looks like a fantastic event. Patrick Field is one of the speakers.

The fact that Obree is one of those rare proper cyclists who doesn't go all Armstronged with drugs is alone enough reason to name a velodome after him.
You dont know that he has not been using PED's or other aids. From all his bike tinkering (which as mitre tester has pointed out is always on the limits or beyond rules) he seems like someone looking for an edge in innovative and tricksy manners. Most pro athletes use tend to use something. It depends on the competiveness of the sport in question and its relation the biological limits of human ability.

Just watched the Flying Scotsman. Can anyone confirm whether Moser was at the track in Norway at 9am in a beige suit shouting "Thees ees eensnity graham you willa cripple yourself!"

it's also not legal for use in British time trials under CTT regs, or international ones under UCI regs.
Legal for Scottish TTs though..... -

Just went to see Graeme at a talk tonight, what an awesome person he is, quite a privilege to be in the same room. He hinted at a training manual he's releasing next month and another possible record attempt on something 'different' - hinting towards a recumbent type bike!? If his 'knee holds together'.

"Graeme"
Great talk. Really enjoyed all three speakers. Got my copy of the Flying Scotsman signed too.

Might have been mentioned, but the sample PDF of Rouleur Magazine on their website has an interesting interview with Obree for anyone who's interested
-
• #174
Did I read somewhere that Obree was currently writing a book about training for cyclists? I can't find mention of it anywhere. Was it someone else?
-
• #175
He is and there was a sample on twmp blog.
It wasn't anything you wouldn't have read elsewhere in the last decade of training blogs/articles/books.
I'd just use it later for doing burnouts behind the nearest Tesco... ;)
