Got the date wrong for the gig I'm still trying to see if this would be possible, I'd have to leave straight from Wembley and could be steamed up with many beers. Logistically I'd say I will more than likely be out.

Shame about not having a support car.
I was hoping it would be joined by a burger van and an ice-cream van

is there any vance of posting the route on mapmyride or something similar, im just trying to figure out what gear ratio to use as I believe there is a long hill at the end?

Yeah there is Ditchling Beacon right at the end .
I have not been up it but i will be running 49x19
And hey you can always walk up it I know the probability of myself doing that will be extremely high I have no shame :) -

Jack, the OP has a link to the (approximate) route. Yes, we'll do Ditchling at the end. As Stix says, if you walk, there's no shame involved. I mean, I can hardly get up that on my geared bike (although I'm getting better). But the lovely downhill makes it all worth it. A gear ratio around 70" should work for you, although I have to say that I don't think I could make it up Ditchling on 70" myself--I always go lower in the gears.
There are two other hills worthy of note--Portnall's Road, off Chipstead Valley Road, and Turner's Hill.

I did ditchling in 66" or something last time, and found that do-able.

I got most of the way up on 48x19, but had to bail with the first dreaded twinges of cramp.

Fuck me I've got this all wrong... I've been riding on 81" - 49/16 and thought 75 -49/17 (maybe 18) might be doable. Bit worried that 66 would be spinny as, and a tad slow, what do you think? Would quite like to make it up the hill at the end as it would be all that bit more rewarding, but glad to hear it's not an embaressment to walk it.

I've done Ditchling on an 81 but I wouldn't recommend it.
Go for a 70-75ish GI and you should be fine. -

49/18 it is then.
Thanks Plagiarist. -

No worries, I'd recommend brakes if you have them though.
I've done it brakeless twice but there's a descent just inside the m25 which is 17% that is a lot more pleasant with a brake.

The pace in general will be fairly relaxed I imagine. And I'm a bit wet when it comes to powering up hills so I let everyone overtake me on the way back down.

I've been riding front only and had to brake hard quite a few times and it's served me well.
Can put a back on, but might go without

I did it with only front last time and will be putting my back one on this time. There are a couple of points where it'll make life more pleasant, as has been said.

back brake?

We're not doing that one.
Des and I recced that a while back and found it unsuitable.
Instead, we're doing the FNRttC route which does Reigate Hill instead. That's easier to ride, as it's wide (A217). It's an eye-watering descent but doesn't have any nasty surprises (there are some bad potholes once we get to the Reigate one-way system but that's long after the descent).
