No Opinel for me. I don't like the locking mechanism, the blades bend easily and can't handle a lot of abuse. It's a cheap knife, but it's nothing more then a cheap knife for me.

Opinel = Pompino

They make a good whittling/cooking/camping knife. If you're bending the blade you're doing it wrong! My last one was sharpened to wafer thinness before I lost it. They're so cheap it's worth buying 2 just so you can practice carving by reshaping the handles..
I think I was given my first one when I was 6 or 7.
Prefer my Benchmade now though. Takes a great edge really quickly and the lock works perfectly and allows you to flick it open if you feel so inclined. -

I have a No10 that was given to me 40 years ago and it is still going strong, definitely a worthy functional knife. Not porn not anti.
-
• #806
Not porn, not anti, just a good, functional, cheap and reliable knife that makes for a sensible portable blade, maybe that makes it the Pompino of the knife world, but that's no bad thing

I had an opinel that I loved, super sharp and took the stone well to keep it keen. The blade snapped off when I stupidly used it as a ground tether for a balloon.
Replaced it like for like from a kitchen ware shop in Brixton Village and I can't get a decent edge on the new one for love nor money. I think my stone is too fine for it.
@cornelius_blackfoot maybe I can have a go with your new stone?

Are you sure you got one with the same blade material? They do a "Carbone" and "Inox". Carbone ones take a much better edge but are more fragile.
-
• #809
I wouldn't know about beeing more fragile, but yes, the Carbone ones are easier to sharpen.
Generally with cheap knives I'd prefer carbon steel to inox steel as the cheap carbon steel is way nicer to sharpen and cheap inox steel is just a pain in the ass.
AUS6, 420HC, 440A etc can >>>>>>>>>
(actually you can make nice knives from 420HC if you get the hardening process juuust right. Buck does that, nice knives. but other knives made out of that stuff are crap IMO) -

Ahhh, I did not know that, it would explain everything.

Can get you one in Decathlon. Actually you can get them in the UK Decathlonshttp://www.decathlon.co.uk/C-309787-opinel

Am using mine nowto make french onion soup with french onions.
-
• #813
Now seeing as I own an opinel no9 it is of course the greatest thing since the bread knife.
Have had a few comments of how nice a pretty the knife is. I think it is the wooden handle.

I have been carrying the higo no kami for a few months. With the weird leather semi-sheath it is perfect for pocket carry. The lanyard hangs a bit out of my pocket to keep it stable and it never opens accidently (because of the way the sheath works).
from bladeforums
"In order to improve the grip I have bought a traditional Japanese leather sheath for my higo no kami Dai, which looks like a traditional sheath for folders but is open on the back an spots a lanyard hole. You put the higo no kami Dai in this sheath, then put a leather strap through the lanyard holes both of the sheath and the knife (thereby also securing the knife to the sheath). To open the knife, pull it up and out by the protruding tang, open it and then push it back into the leather sheath with now serves as a kind of leather scales to the handle. The grip is greatly improved by this and I am told that many Japanese carry their higo no kamis this way."
anyway they are perfect for all standard pencil sharpening/apple cutting/stranger threatening duties and are legal everywhere.

Of course when I lived in God's Favorite Country I carried one of these wherever I went http://webm.land/media/SV3p.webm. That is because I love freedom so much.

It's Yorkshire. It was there before the US of A and God hates travelling away from decent bitter.
Trufax.

God finally blessed the US of America with good beer starting 13 years ago or so. It's to make up for the whole 9/11 thing.

legal everywhere.
isn't it like 4 inches long?

Been looking at those higonokami knives.. Really like the look of the lower one..
Regarding cheap/functional just get a carpenters plastic handle mora.. Dirt cheap, sharp and can handle some serious abuse..
-
• #823
Moras are great. I've had mine for 4 years now abusing it at every step of the way. Mines pretty bout now, from abusing the striker, but tbh have little reason for it to be so sharp but i'm sure it'll sharpen up given some time.
They're absolute tanks, have battened down many a log with a big stick and the mora still is perfect shape bar a few times I've left it too close to the fire (only melted a very small area of the handle (3mm^2). -

So, what was the consensuson storing kitchen knifes?
We have a big magnet on the wall, it's functional and handy and I like having them off the table top, but I suspect that it's real shit for the knifes, fucking up the steels electron structure or something. Is it actually OK or should I be looking for something else? Suggestions, please.
I bought a number 9 opinel a couple of months back in haut savoie where they are made. Cost under 10 euros and is just nice
