  • Looks really good.
If you make stuff yourself it doesn't matter if its perfect or not. It's made by you. There's something about things you made with your own hands...

  • looks crisp. I think the shape looks great, whether it handles well is another matter.

  • I know the thread is called knife porn though it seems to just be the general knife thread here so i just wanted to ask a quick question.

This summer i am going to sweden for a 10 day canoeing trip and was thinking about making a set of knifes; well have lots of spare time. I was thinking of buying the blades here and taking them with me and cutting, staining and fitting the handles in there (there'll be plently of trees there so no need to worry about wood). I'd probably be able to take a hand drill with me and obviously a mora.

Anyone who's made a knife, is this a plausible idea and where would one buy the blades (cheap as possible)?
Also was thinking of doing a set of three small knifes for different purposes. I was thinking of doing a sheep foot blade, a pull blade and a warncliff blade though was wondering if there wee=re any three conventional blades to go for set wise?

  • Wood for a handle needs to be properly dried. You can't really take fresh wood.
otherwise, a hand drill and a mora will take you far. ;)

  • your plan is more or less what I did.
I bought the blade from brisa.com
I found the wood (cherry) in the wood shed at my parents place in sweden. And started carving with a chisel.
I took it home to glue up and finish.

For wood, I'd ask a local for a suitable piece of firewood. Lots of birch around.

And thanks for your comment. I've fixed the asymmetri and started wet sanding now so it is pretty crisp.

  • @drøn , @Murphys_Law

Thanks for that. So i think I'll probably buy some decent wood here. Not sure which kind yet. In fact I'll basically buy all the parts here, and assemble in Sweden. There might be quite a lot of dead birch there so maybe could use that if weather's good?

I'll check on brisa at some point re the blades and see the options. If they're cheap as chips I could bring some extras to make throwing knives and practise them fufuling a large void i can sense in my life. still early stages.

    Thanks again

  • I can recommend Brisa blades.
I built an enzo trapper from one of their kits. Great knife.

  • If you are going to throw things though, there isn't much more satisfying than throwing a tomahawk. I just listen to the audio of people talking in the background while people throw them though. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_1GQFR0_OFQ

  • Heinnie Haynes have cheap blank blades. Their delivery/ customer service is v v good.

  • Travelling knyfz... #mumsplastictablecloth

  • @arrowplum
Yeah but the throwing knifes are more of a concealed weapon and I think if I were an assassin the tomohawk would just be too clunky.
    (sarcastic tone)

    @sacredhart
Thanks I'll give them a look.

  • Just bought a kiwi for day to day whatevers. Not terribly sharp out of the box but really good to hold for its size.

  • Love me some Spyderco. And especially wharncliffe blades.
Does it come with a clip? Could replace the small fixed blade I have carried for the last year...

  • It's very very pointy! Very solid 'lock' too. Doesn't come with a clip but I made a little lanyard thing for it out of some phono cable.

  • made a lanyard ... are you from the 1800's

  • I've been toying with the idea of buying a Spyderco for months, might have to get one now.

  • I made it out of phono cable; you must mean '1980's'. And yes, I am ;)

  • Very nice. Nice lanyard too.
I've got one of these supposedly UK-legal Spyderco UKPK. Nice little knife. Can post pics when at home...

  • I considered one of those, heard they're better steel and quality construction, but I was on a budget.

  • Knife looks ace.

  • lanyard pron ahoy me mateys!

  • @Murphys_Law That's epic! Beautiful work!

  • I haz 2 spydercos, a stainless Dragonfly with a VG-10 blade, and a Squeak.
    Love them both.

would really like the new style dog tag. carbon :) and a Techno.

  • Spydercos are lovely, must get round to nabbing one at some point... I love @Object's little pocket knife/scissor job... Dead nice...
