  • Gil Hibben is without doubt the master!

Creator of the most famous knife in movie history, amongst other incredible creations!

  • 3-in-1!

    Homemade FTW

  • Maybe i'm a geek...but i have all 3 of these :)

Just need the 4th now :)

  • I'm gonna get fucked for this, but I'm actually a bit of a knife geek. Currently about a year into the 18 month waiting list for one of Burt Foster's pieces: http://www.burtfoster.com/

Go on, take a look round. There's a serious craft right there.

  • I have these at the moment, but i'm on the look out for something a bit more vintage. I mean imagine the skill that went into making them. The cutting action really is smooth too, like cutting butter. So sharp.

    Why?

    Why?

Why what Brother? Why wait 18 months for a knife? Nothing I say is likely to justify it sufficiently. I ride a Chas Roberts bike, alot of people would ask why the fuck I'd spend £*** on a steel bike with no gears. Horses for courses. If I've misunderstood your question just say.

  • Why?

    Why not?
Why wait for anything?....cos you appreciate the skill that went into hand making it...at least that's how i see it.

What style you going for bobs dids?

No it wont and no you haven't. I dont get it but as you say, horses for courses.

    Didn't mean offence.

Hey Scott, it'll be a small hunter. Carbon steel blade with micarta scales probably. Something for chucking in the pack on a walk,a worker not a show knife. I've owned a shed load over the years, alot of customs. Absolute agreement with you on your reasons. I also understand why some might think it's nuts. Not looking to convert anyone here so perhaps we'll chat by pm?

    Bob.

    No bother at all :)

  • Those Fosters look utterly lovely - as you say, real craftsmanship there. If anything, they're a little too beautiful for me - if I were spending proper money on a fixed blade (khukuris and the like excepted) I'd probably go to Chris Reeve, whose stuff is pretty plain and industrial looking. That way I wouldn't worry about hurting it.

  • Andy, are they Custom Fixie-Blade knives?

Sounds like it should be nice...how much longer is your wait?

About 6 months hopefully. I've made a point about not bothering him, he might be dead for all I know!

While we're talking about waiting times.....;)

Steff, you'll get yourself in trouble. Professing a love for the Jimpy in another thread, now knives! Never owned a Reeves, mates who have got tired of the knurled handle under hard use. Any good maker will turn out a simple worker that'll take the knocks. It's a bit gimmickey, but in order to achieve Bladesmith status their test knife needs to take having it's blade bent 90 degs in a vice without breaking. They'll take the abuse!

  • knurled

Never heard this word before. I love learning new words.

  • This is a knurled post.

  • Oh, I had no worry about them taking the abuse. It's just that if I'm going to split wood with something, I'd prefer not to feel as if I'm tearing off a corner of an old master to use for kindling ;-)

Point taken about the knurled finish. Thing is, what with it not looking so nice, I'd have no worries about wrapping it in cloth tape or something similarly expedient and minging-looking.

  • ha

  • This thread is in very bad taste. In fact this whole forum is on a very rapid slide :-(

  • this whole forum is on a very rapid slide

    Wheeeee!

  • I started it as a piss take, as I thought the whole knife appreciation thread was pretty pathetic....and i'm not talking just about the OP.
For the record I don't actually give a shit about knives, or the craftsmanship of said knives, or any of that crap.
As far as I am concerned a knife has only one purpose in life, to cut things, and I can't understand how anyone can possibly find anything about them exciting, but thats just me, and I also think people should be free to discuss their hobbies/interests without being branded psychos/maniacs.

  • Andy, are they Custom Fixie-Blade knives?

    They sure are.

I've had one like this for a couple of years. Stood up to some hard use on kayaking trips and some nice long camping hols etc.
