  • I don't understand. It clearly says devices that enables automatic opening. How is a one hand opening blade automatically opened?

All sounds a bit 2A to me.

  • Could well bugger up the local Bobbies as they all seem to carry a Gerber or a Leatherman on the belt.

  • I had one. It was issued equipment. It's difficult to cut seatbelts with a Biro.

  • As far as I'm aware, I am still allowed to carry non-legal edged tools in my job too. Whilst not issued, my leggings have a Smith and Wesson Tool that is one handed opening and locking. In my tunic, I carry two other folding knives that lock and are slightly over three inches in length. One has a blunt tip for water rescue incidents, and the other is plain, both of these are for rescuing myself from potential entanglements.

If I wanted to carry something to do damage to another human, one of my axes would do a much more thorough job.

  • Conversely, an old friend of mine was charged and convicted (about 15 years ago) for having a locking victorinox pen knife with 3 inch blade despite his defence that he used it for his job as a lock smith.

Sure, he used it to open boxes and trim things etc but it wasn't necessary for his work in the eyes of the beak.

  • I'm never sure how to respond to the question: "Any weapons in the vehicle, guns, knives baseball bats?". Firstly, why is a baseball bat classed as a weapon? I had plenty of other sports equipment, bed slats, cat scratching posts which could cause equal damage to a baseball bat. And also I had a hatchet, a full set of kitchen knives and various utility knives, none of which I'd class as weapons, but he didn't specifically ask so...

  • Exactly my point....
Come the zombie apocalypse, I'll be grabbing a wonderful little trenching shovel....

  • Thanks. I hadn't read it that way but I'm not a lawyer. It seems a stretch but knife laws are already a bit silly so this might not help.

  • The blade does lock so I don't carry it around normally, but it is legal to carry if you have a good reason. The new law makes flick knives illegal to own so I would have to get rid of my leatherman if it was covered. Doubt that's the intention though.

  • As the law says - A court will decide if you’ve got a good reason to carry a knife or a weapon if you’re charged with carrying it illegally.
Rest assured your Leatherman would never be considered a flick knife.

  • The law really is quite clear. I might not like it, but I know where I stand.

I’ll be a bit annoyed if I’ve got to give up my liner-lock Lansky, but it only leaves my house when we’re camping anyway. In reality it’s an expensive cheese knife.

  • When you say 'a court', does this mean a magistrate, a jury, or what? On day rides I often have a locking Opinel in the bottom my saddlebag, for cutting up my lunch and potentially for cutting tyre boots etc; while I consider this totally legit, I'm uncomfortably aware that this is possibly subject to interpretation.

  • And while we are still on this subject, does anyone have any recommendations for a uklegal folder that is not a SAK? I want a big hefty blade ( of the correct size) and a flat construction (eg not an optimal).

  • If it gets to this. Once you've had your knife confiscated by the Aged William, cautioned and told you will be reported for an appearance at court; you present yourself at court in front of a magistrate or it could end up in front of a judge and jury at Crown Court. There are so many factors to be considered that it is a minefield for all sides. If you're stopped in an area where there has been knife crime and you have an illegal knife in your possession then it is unlikely to end in your favour. It's all down to attitude on both sides of the initial interaction (and CPS advice) which decides if you go to court. It is then down to the court to decide if your locking Opinel was purely for your innocent food carving or not.
A factor in your favour is the accessibility of the weapon. If it's really wrapped up and difficult to get to then that would imply that you do only "cut the cheese" so to speak.

  • Heh. Once upon a time in Hull I arrived home to find I'd been broken into and stuff stolen.

I phoned the local constabulary and on their arrival the Attending Officer asked why I was carrying a Leatherman on my person.

My reply was that I'd just finished work at the time of discovery of said incident, as I was in liveried uniform, and proceeded to ask why said Officer had the same item on his belt.

Said Officer then 'shut up' and proceeded to investigate reported crime.

  • Spyderco UK pen knife is pretty awesome.

  • possession of knives in public are generally dealt with under 2 different laws - that governing possession of offence weapons and that dealing with bladed articles.
re the former, unless the knife is designed as a weapon (some tactical / specialist killing tool or with a knuckle duster hand grip for example) it's only considered a weapon in law if you have it with intent to use it as a weapon.
re the latter the law is simply designed to stop people carrying bladed (or pointed) articles in public for no good reason - you don't have to have a criminal intent to be guilty of this offence - but you do have to have a good reason to avoid criminal responsibility. there is no definition in law of what amounts to a good reason, the court (if you are prosecuted) will decide on a case by case basis. this law covers articles with a blade or point, except folding knifes with a blade of less than 3 inches. as a matter of law, blades that can lock in place are not considered folding.

  • I’ve seen that one, I agree it’s fine, but the macho in me wants something bigger .

  • Enzo PK70 but that might be a bit small for you. Beautifully made.
Boker Plus XS is much more 'tactical' but not very friendly.
CRKT Liong Mah #5 (from heinnie.com) has a good reputation - felt OK when I got the chance to play with one a couple of years ago.

Loads more at heinnie.com - they have a 'UK friendly' section that are all sub-3" slip joints.

  • I went back to the folks on the weekend, Mum is clearing out stuff now that Dad's in care.

She wanted me to take some of my items that Dad was looking after.

Now, back in the day when I was a teenager, you could go to antique markets and buy this sort of thing no questions asked...

Not sure what to do with it now because there would be a few questions asked if a search of the property was done.

I also have a cavalry sword that is in the loft back home...

  • Why would a search be conducted at the house? Never mind.
Even if it was, you can own this and the sword in your own home without issue. If you don't want them, sell them.
I was given a Fairbairn Sykes fighting knife and sheath in similar circs by my mother as she didn't want it in her house. Long story slightly shorter - During a firearms search of a chap's house (he collected firearms and Hitler/Nazi/WWII memorabilia) I spotted a similar FS black handled knife. He said he'd bought it for £80 on something called Ebay. I had no use for mine and I'm not sentimental so I opened an account and put mine on Ebay and added that my father had brought it home after service in Europe in 1945 etc. It was on £76 with seconds to go which I thought was excellent.
It sold (Jan '04) for £865 to a Dutch collector. csb.
There must be a market for them and somewhere you can put them up for sale/auction and then treat yourself and or parents with any resultant cash.

  • Cheers, Site looks just the place to spend an hour or two.

  • Why would a search be conducted...

I've noticed that the stories of people's granny's cousin's dogwalker's half brother who was done for having a non-locking, legal length knife on them always seem to gloss over the circumstances under which it this discovery was made.

  • I too love knifes to cut pineapples
    mine:

  • Do you know why the red one is half the price of the black one (talking about the CRKT Liong Mah #5)?
