If you want to stick with DT Swiss, 350s are cheaper and seem to do the same thing - ie, spin around in the middle of a rim.
-
• #8253
I'm not that fussed. Don't they all do that spinning in the middle thingo?
-
• #8255
I don't know what the 240 gets you that the 350 doesn't do. Presume it's slightly lighter, which makes 2/8ths of fuck-all difference.

Hi.
So here is the current setup:
DT Swiss 350 in rr585Decent I think.
They were on the bike I got passed down.Any idea how much money would have to be spent to upgrade in a way that makes sense?
I can’t value the wheels at all

What model are these? Nipples are not visible; is the carbon structural or just a fairing?
Look like Spinergy Stealth but I can't see any version with black decals, non-aero spokes, aluminium brake track and internal nipples
Edit: also what should I pay for them?

Spinergy...what should I pay for them?
Somebody should pay you to take them away.

I know this is a forum meme or whatever but I thought it was just the Rev-X that are deadly. These look like plain old road wheels so I am assuming they're not so failure-prone and not so choppy-choppy in a crash. Am I wrong? Are they shit? Spinergy Stealth (assuming that's what these are) seem to have decent reviews...
edit: followup question, aluminium brake track is fine descending mountains right? or should I go for a full aluminium rim?

I am become death, destroyer of worlds.

I rocked double spinergys for a short while. They made a noise like they were any second going to implode and impale my face and testicles but despite that, I didn't die and I felt swag as fuck.

RIP Michele Bartoli’s knee.

So to be clear this is what I'm after:
- something that won't explode going down a mountain
- something that won't explode through normal riding (I'm 80 kg, bike will be somewhere between 5-10 kg - no idea)
- rim brake
- £150 or less
- don't weigh a ton
- testicle impalation/knee-ectomy a bonus
options I've got:
- I spoke to a guy offering some Cole Rollen Lite for £70 with a set of Clement tyres (I need tyres)
- I also spoke to a guy offering those Spiney RG (pictured ^ above), not much wear, for £150
- I have a crap old aluminium Ksyrium front wheel (pictured on this horrid bike) which I can use if necessary but nothing appropes for the rear
- doesn't seem to be many great options on the forum at the moment
What do I do?
I have £0 income - I'm paying for this through the sale of another bike - don't tell me to buy Hunt wheels unless you want to sell me yours for £150.
Someone help or I'm going to end up committing a great crime: aero frame and cheap shallow rims
- something that won't explode going down a mountain

Buy these and stop looking at dumb 90s wheels.

What do I do?
Compare anything you're offered with shiny new Aksiums. If whatever you're looking at isn't better than that, it needs to be cheaper. I'm happy to entertain arguments (cup & cone, J-bend) for Shimano RS010, which is under £100 at any competitive retailer, but on balance I marginally prefer the Aksium.

My problem with those (and the Coles) is they're nearly 1900g. The whole point of this bike is to ride up some mountains (in violation of my own principles, on normal road gearing, not 20 GI). Feel like there must be something better out there second hand for £150. Feel like I could build something better myself for £150 in fact but don't have time.
But you're right, both of those options I suggested aren't great in comparison to the Aksiums. Urgh.
Annoyingly I sold some hardly-used Fulcrum Racing 5 for £50 a few months ago, they would have done the job

Lol @ mountains and cheap second hand carbon

You're 80,000g. Your bike is 10,000g. Weight-weenie clincher road wheels you can't even afford second hand are 1500g. You're worrying about something which will make about 1/10th of the difference between a having a 28T or a 29T bottom sprocket when it comes to climbing a mountain.
-
• #8270
With that budget you should be able to hunt a decent used alloy wheelset. You won't climb any faster with deep carbon

Bike will be some kilos under 10kg unless I do something horribly wrong. And I'm maxed out on the cassette and chainring ratios which is why I don't want to get something heavy - 34/28 is going to smash me. I could spend the difference (between wheelsets) on a new derailleur and cassette but then I have extra bits that I don't need and have to sell again.
But okay, physics wins. I'll see you all in
hellanti when I build a lightweight aero frame up with 2 kg cheapskate wheels@Netakure that's what I thought but there's bugger all out there. Don't want to risk eBay because I need it built ASAP and don't have enough time to sod around with returning things. the ones I posted above are local so I could check them out at least. Bugger it, I'll just get some cheap ones.

Kinlin XR22T/XR22TR, Cyclebasket for Aci DB spokes, Bitex hubs, brass nips.
20h front, 24h rear.
I’d hazard a guess that’s 1650g? Not hard to build, repairable and nice to ride (once you’ve lost 10kg) and you can buy the parts within budget.

lightweight aero frame
Does not compute.
I can't weight (swidt) for weight weenyism to disappear. "look i can pick it up with my little finger" was never a measure for success racing.
If you're 80kg use the cheap, heavy wheels, lose 2kg of body weight and boom you've saved money and broken even in weight terms. Happy to help.

• #8274
Yeah, that's what makes e.g. Aksiums so unappealing. Just don't have time to wait for postage from China for hubs etc. But sod it, maybe I'll just find the best bits I can that will arrive in time to build some.
@hippy okay, everyone knows how low my standards are now - I mean lightweight in comparison. My lightest bike is probably my Kona Sutra so that ought to tell you something.
For reference I bought this - should have taken the wheels with it

Plug in some climbs and some weights and see how much/little difference it makes.

Surely they must..... but nothing showing yet. Sad face, as I love Shimano hubs. And pancetta.
