Anyone used these pads on Zipps? Seem pretty good value for 2 pairs and score highly in the reviews

I use the blue power versions on enve wheels, much good stopping power

Wiggle blues are made by Ashima and 5 quid

...and haven't melted your rims/face?
-
• #7806
They're a touch more than the zipp pads which I've quite liked. Decent stopping power and only rarely squeal, usually after I start. Looking at cheaper alternatives but will probably end up chickening out as I do like the way my face looks, so may well give those a try

Hed c2 weighs the same and hed plus is 20g lighter could be the hubs that contributed more?
Kinlin xr22t is the same weight as c2. -
• #7808
Yeah but those are nearly 500g
Trust me, they won't hold you back. I rode these in the mountains recently and they were fantastic. Stiff and wide, they roll brilliantly and are fast.

What's the fattest tyre I could put on a pair of shimano wh501? (as these are the cheapest wheelset i can find for the job i need)
I'd like to go >32 and possibly up to 40c (marathon supreme). It's for the mum bike. Or I'd consider a cheap 650b that would let me put big tyres on.

I wouldn't go over 28. I put some Marathon Supreme 40s on a pair of R500s once, and they were a disaster.
Around £65 will get you a pair of Rodi Vision 25 rims and some Claris hubs. Admittedly, adding spokes and building is going to take you a little over R501 money, but it would be well worth it in order to get wheels which will work properly with 38-40mm tyres.

I rode with 35c Kojaks on R501 - all ok.

Thanks both.

I've used them extensively, whilst they're ok I would strongly recommend the SwissStop Black Prince pads- they're really very good indeed.

DT Swiss hubs don't include skewers.
What should I get?
-
• #7815
Shimano one from the LBS.

Thanks for the suggestion

Disc or rim? RWS are great. If not then any old skewer that looks how you like it.

Rim brakes -DT Swiss 411 / 240s.
RWS look good - and matchy matchy ftw.

A mate of mine cooked his Roval carbon rim on the 5k descent of the Planche des Belles Filles on Wednesday. It's 2 years old. Is it worth asking about a free replacement? I think 5k isn't really alpine, so not something I'd expect to cook a rim from a big manufacturer on. He's not over the weight limit (109kg according to the Roval site).

• #7820
what exactly happened?
-
• #7821
Was he using the correct pads?
-
• #7822
I have 28s on mine; but if you are going to run 32 or more then I suggest you go for 17mm or 19mm rims.
-
• #7823
He was using the pads that came installed on the bike with the wheels, Swiss Stop ones I think.
@amey We were descending the hill and at the bottom he said to stop as the rear wheel was making a weird noise and on inspection the brake track had warped on a section about 8cm long. The front rim was fine.

Does the exalith stuff on Mavic rims wear off or stay forever?
-
• #7825
wears off
Had a look at the rims last night - looks like there is plenty of life in them. I was quite surprised, in fact.
Anyway, if anyone is interested I will post pics. Tyres are nearly new so that's gotta be £20 or so.
