Odd question but can anyone tell me how novatec Classics fair in the lairy freehub category? I'm enjoying the hope noise but have found a set of novas that are inexpensive for another bike... Any thoughts?
Cheers,

My disc hub was pretty loud. Not quite Hope but pretty loud

Not very loud IME. I'm used to Hope and DT though

Are DT freehubs loud? I went with the tester approved DT Swiss R24 disc wheels. Welp, no more freewheeling for me.
Also, anyone know if they come with QR skewers?

R24 uses a cheaper and presumably quieter ratchet than DT's bling hubs

R23 on missus' is quite loud

Building up something for audax/light touring and just ordered a pair of 32 hole Ultegra 6800 hubs from RCZ (80eur the pair seems quite reasonable).
Now I'm considering a pair of black rims to go with - need fair width, reasonable strength, and ideally not overly heavy. So far I've been thinking something like DT R460 (70eur pair +PP), XC-279 (82eur +PP), any others I should look at (or not look at).
I'm thinking about just going for the 460s but wondering if anyone has some experience with them.

Get R460 if you want tubeless

Whichever the lightest and widest.
Braking surface are redundant on disc wheel, and heavier.

Sorry, forgot. Rim brakes.
Thanks for replies!@mdcc_tester You seem to be person who knows what are rims on r23 and 24's?

what are rims on r23 and 24's?
R23 wheels seem to use the R460 sleeve-jointed rim, R24 wheels have their own pin-jointed rim. For MY2016 (i.e. in some shops now) there is also the R32 wheelset which mates the RR511 welded-joint rim to the hubs from the R23 wheels.
It's worth checking which model year you're getting if you order DT R23/24 as they have started shipping with tubeless tape and valves for MY2016, so although the old stock might seem like a bargain, it might not be if you're going to be spending another €40 on the tubeless kit.

The R24s I ordered from bike24 (at tester's suggestion) came with tubeless tape and valves, but no qr skewers. What 100/135 skewers are recommended for not too much money? I guess 130 ones wouldn't work? Shimano still best choice?

Shimano still best choice?
Yes, if you're using disc brakes with 5mm QRs then Shimano are the only halfway sensible option. XT (M8000) are about £25 a pair including post from Germany

Cheers tester! Also, just re-read my previous post - I wasn't insinuating it was your fault that I didn't get QRs, was just noting that they came with the tubeless stuff from bike24.

I didn't take it that way. DT/Bike24 did you a favour by not supplying skewers, if they had you'd probably have been tempted to use them, and the ones which come with R24s are pretty cheap and nasty. They're fine for use with rim brakes, but the front disc brake is always trying to spit the wheel out of the fork end, so you need a decent QR if you're unfortunate enough to be stuck without a through axle for the time being.

Good! :) Any idea whether I'd need 168mm or 173mm rear QR, of those two XT ones you'd linked? And will a regular front road Shimano QR do the trick, or is the XT front one likely to be better somehow? Silly question, I'm sure.

The different length are to fit thin/thick droupouts. There's probably a SI document somewhere which gives actual dimension limits, but the short one is probably right for most frames. FWIW, I have a 163mm Ultegra here which clamps down to 142mm max overall width across dropouts, so the 168 should cover up to 147mm.
A road front will work fine, but you might as well be a tart and get a matching pair :-)

Cheers tstr! Think that's everything ordered for my build... Just got to work out how to put ultegra hydro stuff together now!
WI T11 hubs are light and better hubs than CK's IMO in that they are simpler to service.
Kinlin XR31t is an exceelent rim off set drilling too. not that pretty but wide deep. 490g as well.
If you want light and wide then the ryde pulse sprint is a good option and so is the pacenti SL23.
The kinlin and HED belgium + (the older C2 is not even sold anymore) are alot stiffer.
So you have choose between light and wide, and hevaier, stiffer and wide.
Royce hubs are lovely too. Shimano dura ace are perfect and so are Campagnolo Record.
