  • I'm never not worrying

  • Superstar pave 28, under £160 with a current 20% discount code.

    Quite light, quite wide.

  • Thanks all for the CK knowledge / opinions. Think that many notes is a bit too much for me at the mo, as hawt as they are....!

  • Get CK.

They will last more than twice as long as anything that costs half as much.
CK parts have to be looked at as a long term investment, and perceived value for money should be calculated accordingly.

  • Get CK.

They will last more than twice as long as anything that costs half as much.

But not eight times as long as something an eighth of the price, which is what Shimano 5800 hubs are (£51.77 a pair inc. post from Rosebikes vs. £409.98 for R45s from Wiggle)

  • Good modern day throw away attitude right there.
I thought you of all people would appreciate the workmanship that goes into CK hubs.

  • Thanks. Got some arc22's on their way.
Remember a few people saying the rim tape they come with is crap, what's a good swap?

  • I thought you of all people would appreciate the workmanship that goes into CK hubs.

If anything, I appreciate the workmanship in Shimano 105 hubs more. As the old saying goes, an engineer is somebody who can make for 10¢ what any fool can make for $1

  • I give up.
Dont buy CK hubs Bezzin, buy cheap 105 ones and just chuck them in river when they die and buy another set.

  • Isn't the old saying it is all about feeling?

  • chuck them in river when they die

If you look at people's experience with mid-range Shimano, you may find he has a long ride ahead of him before he gets to that river. 105/Ultegra hubs will outlast several sets of rims if you keep on top of the cleaning and maintenance.

  • Re. durability the classic rear has manageable chain slack in the 12-17. Has been serviced by trusted mechanic and is working. Conundrum being: to overhaul this issue same mechanic would probably need too much time to make it worthwhile. But they are as reliable as anything from Shimano.

  • I agree, but mavic rims are too narrow... I may consider 105 hubs and DT r460 rims.

  • They will last more than twice as long as anything that costs half as much.

As long you look after it regularly.

They're awesome hubs, but they're not exactly one you can fit and forget.

  • ... there are too many options on the market...

  • True - and If you're going to maintain a CK, why not a 105? If/when it dies, tech will have moved on and you'll be wanting a new 12speed disc hub by then anyway.

  • Re. durability the classic rear has manageable chain slack in the 12-17. Has been serviced by trusted mechanic and is working. Conundrum being: to overhaul this issue same mechanic would probably need too much time to make it worthwhile.

Do you mean your CK rear hub as a problem that can't be fixed economically?

Edit: oh, laggy ring drive. I see.

  • Santa Fixie have some decent wheels, H+Son Archetype laced to cartridge bearing hubs for a little over £200.

They also have coaster wheel for £45 too, including an 16t cog.

  • Superstar pave 28, under £160 with a current 20% discount code.

Sorry but I can't see the discount for the superstar wheelset

  • Code - FLASH20MAIL
    Until 18th oct

  • You know everything guys. Thanks

  • Still wondering...

The old man wants a snazzy new set of wheels. I believe his Specialized Roubaix is 11 speed Ultegra, so needs to be Shimano hub. Budget is ±£400, what's best?

Also, I will be needing a set, around the £300 mark (10 speed) for the Eurotrip, heavy mileage, preferably light and a little aero if poss.

There was no reply from @varno about his wheels, when I messaged him on here.

  • For that price range I'm considering Campagnolo Zonda (Shimano option), £247 on Wiggle, or the deeper Shimano RS81 C35 (basically Ultegra level), £379 on Wiggle. Zonda for you and C35 for your dad maybe?

  • I wouldn't be considering either of those, personally.

  • Great, but useless without another suggestion.
