I'd imagine the billet is forged before it gets machined...no?
-
• #5128
Forging is mahoosively difficult due to fecking massive tonnage required to do it properly so no UK made hub is forged before machining. Shimano cold forge their stuff which is even more difficult but gives the best results.
Only Shimano and Praxis forge chainrings out of any manufacturer in the world.

I googled "broke tea cup" and the first thing that came up was this!

Which makes it even more frustrating that Shimano will still only offer the batsrad things in 36 and 32 hole drillings.

O rly? I wonder where Hope got these forged pre-machined billets from.

Yeah, why don't shimano offer their hubs at different drillings? I'd build a DA hub wheel set in a second if you could do 20/24
-
• #5133
Perhaps because they have wheelset in that drilling?
-
• #5134
Yeah, but stuck with their choice of rim and spokes.
-
• #5135
That's my thinking, perhaps it's marketing, reduced the choice to just buying a wheelset than buying a 24h Shimano hubs laced to Zipp.
-
• #5136
That's what I've always assumed. Bloody annoying though.
-
• #5137
They do go down to 24h front and rear though.

etc.

I just think it's a shame they're (only) doing black. Given the groupset has lots of silver and if you're using DA hubs you often want something a bit more classic.... well that's my preference anyway.

Forged billet is not a forged hub shell.
Cold forging hubs is this.
-
• #5140
Like the forged hub shell which Hope makes before machining them:

Did not know this. 24 hole rear and titanium freehub body, slightly heavy but i bet thats a smooth hub that will last ages (if cared for)

My Arc 22 wheelset came in from superstar, It's a good looking set of wheels, glossy black hubs with glossy black rims and subtle details. Weight was spot on as claimed on the website.
Only issue is there's a pressure limit of 80psi written on the rims, that wasn't mentioned on the site at all before buying. This won't be an issue for me as I'm a light rider and will be running wide tyres, but I could imagine it might be a problem for some

I don't suppose anybody choosing a 25mm wide rim is going to be using less than 28C tyres, that's 70psi front and 80psi rear for me and I'm 100kg. I don't suppose they've bothered to put a proper table on the side of the rim, as maximum pressure depends on the tyre section for practical rim designs.
-
• #5144
I can't picture you riding on 80psi for the life of me.
Can't wait for mine, 27mm tyres on 19mm internal is bliss.

Anyone still looking for r-sys? half price...

Mavic are ideally avoided.
-
• #5147
Why? thought they were good, but the only problem was that they are a little expensive for what you can get instead.
-
• #5148
No-one is ever looking for r-sys wheels.
-
• #5149
Why can't they just admit that no one wants their hubs and spokes and sell exalith-coated, wider open pro's and clean up. Despite lasting longer, they would surely still make more money as everyone and their dog would have them, no?
the rims on cx-rays and some r45's would be a killer wheelset.

Nothing like this, I still stand by them being utterly reliable.
