Does anyone produce a 25mm wide alloy clincher rim, bar the HED Ardennes+? I'm basically looking for the Ardennes+ but cheaper? I'm looking for a winter wheel set.

I'd agree with everyone saying sub-32h is counter intuitive for a winter road set. I'd either go for a pair of the cheap shimano factory wheelsets with higher spoke counts, or go for a 32h set of hand builts.

Ages ago I was hunting for a fairly wide rim that wasn't too heavy, based on the manufacturer's claims the Velocity Dyad was the lightest of the wide touring style rims. Personally I'd go for those with the reflective coating in 32h with Tigra hubs, or if you wanted something a bit lighter I'd go for the wide KinLin / BHS on Novatec 28/32h... Not that those 2 spokes on the front will save a great deal, but 28h should be fine on the front.

But I think the Dyad is actually 25mm whereas the KinLin / BHS is 'only' 23mm.

My novatec hubs from Bdop arrived without being stung by duty in 3 working days! Would recommend.

I'm about 60kg and unlikely to get any heavier. I feel like anything more than 20/24 would be a waste of spokes. For that reason, 100g per rim between the A23's and the Dyads seems pointless, especially when you'd add extra spokes too, even though the Dyads are slightly wider.

Are the wide Kinlins any lighter than A23s?

Don't worry about it, they're not in short supply :D

If anything it's good to have plenty of spokes in a training wheel. You pop one and you can continue the ride (with the brake open).

Kinlin's are 490gram a rim, quite heavy but should have a thick brake track and be quite strong

From the internet facts I've read I wouldn't build A23 up less than 28/32h. The KinLin / BHS is deeper and regularly gets built up on WW in 20/24h or 20/28h so I'm sure 20/28h will be fine for you if you need a low spoke count.

I don't think your weight matters as much as you think on a winter wheelset. Obviously @60kg you need less spokes than me to hold you up, but if you hit a pot hole because it's hidden by a puddle or slip, etc. regardless it's still going to ping out of shape. In which case on a drizzly autum/winter/spring evening you'd want a wheel that you can ride home rather than calling a taxi/your mum to pick you up, no? Otherwise why not get a set of 50mm carbon clinchers with an alu brake track?

I'm about 15kg heavier than you at racing weight - although that's probably Sportive weight in my case.

Which means I'm closer to 20kg heavier than you right now.

That aside, as others have said, it's always good to finish a training ride on the bike, rather than in a taxi - so a wheel with enough spokes to lose one and carry on, rather than jam against the chainstay (which happened when a spoke went in Me Julie's 24 spoke rear wheel, and she's 10kg lighter than you) and bring proceedings to a halt.

^ This. If they're training/winter wheels not high-days-and-holidays or racing wheels, then moah spokes is good. My winter bike's wheels have 32 spokes for that reason.

Just buy some R501s and get over it.

I've been riding a pair of 28 spoked A23's on my Tarck Biek for 2-3 years now and they've been absolutely solid as a rock. Not gone a spot out of true in all that time, although admittedly without breaking forces.

Sorry, I don't think I've been as clear as I could have been when posing my initial question here. These will be my wheels. I'll sell my current set of Ksyriums and replace them with these, so while they'll be ridden over the winter, they'll probably stay on the bike until I can be bothered / afford some stupid carbon. Might just go for the KinLin/BHS option and get on with it.

@edscoble: nah to 501s, Width is an absolute necessity.

I'd go Novatec SL .. trade off a little weight penalty for availability of parts; easy to service and overall extra dependability.

Yeah .. do factor in between £30 and £50 for customs and handling charges from parcelforce

I might be able to weasel my way around that, but even with £50 on top it's a pretty good deal for a fantastic set of wheels!
