Don't buy Bontrager wheels either. They sent me a replacement rear wheel and it lasted 4 days before I snapped a spoke on that one too>>>>>
had enough of this bollox. Purchased these today at a real bargain if anyone is interested

BTW cheers for all the info on here. I've just placed an order with Harry Rowland for a pair of Ambrosio Excellight 28/28 on Novatec hubs, £274 posted.

I just splurged on Ritchey WCS Zeta's at LBS - only they gave me Campy rear instead of Shimano.......doh!

When I sell my downhill bike I'm looking to get a wheel set built up. Must be shimano 10 speed and clincher.
I'm thinking of hope pro 2/3 hubs, cxp33 spokes and very good spokes. Probably 32 hole 3x all round as although I'm not heavy I ride pretty hard.
My current wheels are 105 hubs and cxp22 rims 32 hole 3x, will I notice a difference???
-
• #384
Yeah, they'll be noisier.
-
• #385
Those Richey WCS Zeta are a bloomin' total revelation - that is the best upgrade I could have made, def so chuffed
-
• #386
Yeah, they'll be noisier.
That's the only reason I want to change hahahaha, just need more excuses to convince myself............
-
• #387
Lighter rim weight will mean they'll climb a little easier.
-
• #388
...but there isn't really any weight difference between a cxp22 and 33 is there?
-
• #389
Mavic say 30 grams per rim.
-
• #390
Yeah I know there's not much weight difference, just wondered if being ether quality would mean they'd roll better
-
• #391
better quality rims roll better?
worry about the tyres instead.

Hmmm. I've been riding on some Bontrager Select wheels for the last 5 years (they came on the bike). It seems when they were available they were £90. I'm 95kg and they've survived and stayed true.Is there a (shimano 9-speed) wheelset for under £250 that could survive a fat b'stard and make me even faster?

My velocity a23 set was below that, the weight of them for a 32 spoke count impressed me too.
-
• #394
What did they cost/weigh?
-
• #395
1800g and £258 delivered. Great if you ask me, for the type of riding I do.

I very badly want this at the moment:
But cannot justify the expense to myself.
If someone would like to buy it for me, and then give it to me as a present, I will then give them a present that coincidentally might be the same value as the hub.
Hint, hint.

A23?
I'm going to build a wheelsets with velocity A23 (852g pair) and Mack superlight hubset (47g F, 175g R).
add 280g for 64 spokes, 20g nipples, and hopefully should be a durable lightweight wheelset for all kind of riding estimated around 1400g.
Probably will be closer to 1600g giving how manufacturer tend to overestimated their claim weight.

Sounds great Ed. Not heard much about the Mack hubs though, I went with Miche hubs, which surprisingly are lighter than hope and Ultegra hubs, bloody silent too, very easy to service which was another plus in my books.
I wouldn't hesitate in recommending this wheel set to anyone who wants a solid set for commuting/ training/ audax.
Come to think of it you could build up a lower spoke set and have quite a nice pair of climbing wheels.

Just Riding Along. Give them a call as they'll build them to your spec.
Also pair the rims up with some 25mm tires, they feel great to ride on, my old 28mm with thinner rims didn't feel as comfortable.
nah , id prefer one with ham and cheese.
