Hmm so the ck wheels arrived further inspection of them tonight the rear flange had a hairline crack. They're going straight back in the morning.
The hunt is on again for a solid pair of audax wheels for year round commuting.
Fire away!
Surely open pro's are the obvious rim choice paired with any hub of your liking, shimano ultegra hubs can be had pretty cheaply seem them for roughly £100 for a pair

I'm not sure if Open Pro are the best choice though to be honest. The ceramic were as they are hard wearing, but as you can't get hold of them any more it may be time to look somewhere else.

Halo rims, have some nice options for UK rim buyers.
Solid touring rim (overkill for spencey?)
http://www.halo-rims.com/products-details.php?id=RMHAWL76Light semi-aero rim (decent option for Hugo?).

Only as part of this package.
I like the idea of being able to run tubless tyres, just because it sounds like a tub with the ease of a clincher... even tho there are only a couple of tyre options. However, if they're going to be almost £100 per rim I'd rather be rocking a HED. logo.
As for the spokes - that's really useful. Shame about the black tho, as this was going to be an all black build. I also think I'm going to go for alu internal nipples.

If you go for internal nipples, get veloplugs, rather than rim tape.
The ano is not massively noticable.

What cabling system is that, SF?
-
• #334
Yep, Veloplugs were what I had in mind, 1) for easy access from the top and 2) for the weight.

The Alpha rims are ideal for cyclocross use, they are** best used with normal tyres** such as NoTubes' Raven or the Maxxis Raze or Mud wrestler, or any other suitable tyre. We find that "tubeless ready" tyres like the Hutchinson bulldog or piranha often fit too tightly on the Alpha 340.
Also I just got an email from wheelbuilder.com and they're quoting about $87 USD shipping for a pair of rims.... hmmm.... decisions, decisions.
I think I'm going to leave this thread for a while and weigh up all the pros and cons. But provisionally, its the SupperLight hubs in an unknown colour, with the Pillar spokes, with A23, Alpha 340, or HED. C2's.

Is that not Nokon?
-
• #337
I don't think so.

It is Nokon

SwissComp cabling from EBay.
Worked well. Especially being able to lengthen it again after shortening it.
Did this short section half a dozen times. But could'nt get the curve I wanted. Went with the length that best attuated the caliper in the end.

I am going to need a nice pair of preferably hand build wheels for commuting/racing and climbing. Any suggestions? I don#t have faith in these low spoke patterns as I just don't think they can handle the force. I dont care about comfort or weight too much, as rigid and fast as possible for say < £400 the set.

Ok spoke to just riding along
They're able to do me a 32h Miche Primato on Velocity A23 rim double butted DT comp spokes for £240. That wheelset really sounds like a winner to me, the hubs are sealed rather than cup and cone (easy to maintain) and weigh less than the hope hubs.
My other alternative is to go for an Ultegra hub instead of the Miche and that'll set me back £280.
What do you guys think? The weight saving between the two would be in the Miche favour so I really don't know what I'd gain on the Ultegras.

lol
It was tongue in cheek. But I like to know that if a spoke does snap I don't need to disengage the break and pray another one doesn't go before I get to my destination. -

Look at the IRD 27mm rims, and maybe some royce hubs.

Anyone? I'd like to order the wheels as soon as possible. As they could take 2 weeks to be built. I don't think I could get anything as good as that for the money. Budget £300 tops.

I think if there was ever a case for a flip/flop hub, it's this saga!

I'm confused? Road wheels?
Pretty sure 2x will give a better angle leaving the hub than 3x. You want the spokes coming out at right angles to the radial vector. (if that makes any sense).
Those spokes are made by a reputable firm, Pillar. Better known for Ti spokes. I have them on most of my bikes now. They make the same range of spokes as Sapim, DT-Swiss, Wheelsmith etc. So its easier to refer to them as eg. CX-Ray-esque, or Revolution-esque. But that hints at a cheap copy, which is not the case. Like I say, all the big brands do various aero spoke, or WW spokes. CX-rays have a more eliptical shape, the Pillars are simply flatened. If you look at the elbow (definite trouble spot on spokes). It has the same dimensions as the DT spokes, in that it fits more snugly into the hub flange, when comed to Sapinm. IMHO this improves longevity. The black anodizing is pants though.
Bought all of mine through BDop, and am about to order some 259s for my fatty wheels.
Have you looked at these?
