  • Shouldn't use the same pads for your crabon rims after using them on metal ones, as they tend to pick up chips of alumina which wreck the crabon

  • I am aware of that- surely that's not what FBC is on about?

  • Eh yes. Changing wheels is always a bit of a hassle.

  • Get some Ambrosio nemesis laced to open pros or whatever your rim of choice is.

ambrosio nemesis is a rim. Dan means bog-standard ambrosio hubs. They're grrrreat.

  • My HED's are ~27mm wide at the brake track.

Does there exist an alloy rim, designed for rim brakes, that would be close enough to that 27mm width so as not to need the brakes adjusted by more than turning the knob-adjuster?

    Velocity Cliff Hanger.

  • Good effort, bit heavy.

  • Why do you not want to go for the Ardennes Plus SL?

  • These?

  • They look very cool, wider than a wide thing (2mm difference to the Stingers, enough to just wind the adjuster in a bit), but I discovered today that my work are paying me the initial offer, not the salary we agreed, plus I'm getting emergency tax on top of that.

So- need to sort that out.

  • Dem alloy be so sexy

  • Other option I can thin of is the Pacenti SL23 (24mm wide, 18mm internal).

  • Your experience of them put me off (if I recall correctly?)

  • That's the PL23, SL23 is the modern version, BMMF have a set if you want to make enquiry.

  • I think there's a thread on here discussing the SL23 but I can't find it now. Generally very positive feedback but a common complaint was difficulty getting tyres on and off (because they're tubeless ready).

  • Thinking of ditching my farsports carbon tubs for some deep clinchers instead. Would like to buy new and am thinking about Hed Jet 6. Is this a smart choice?

Alternatives seem to be zipp 404s and the dura ace c50. In the real world, are all of these wheels similar enough not to matter? Is this just an exercise in branding and prices?

I like the wide toroidal design. Going from 48mm 'V' to 56mm 'toroidal' I've noticed a massive improvement in sidewind handling. So the HEDs tick that box (as do the Zipps). Otherwise AFAIK the Wheel componentry is of similar quality.

Actually I'd go ENVE ses 6.7. for a bit more at the back, and less shouty logos.

  • Merlin had some cheap Zipps.

  • Enves are significantly more expensive than the other two so they are out

Best uk prices I can find are

Hed Jet 6 FR: £1254 (wiggle)
    Zipp 404 firecrest: £1500 (merlin)

Firecrests have carbon brake tracks and 100g or so lighter. Not sure I care about either of those though.

  • Looks like Hed have a new line of Jet's, called the Jet+. 25mm width instead of 23mm, same price, slightly heavier. Tempted to ignore.

  • Hmmm the Jet+ sounds nice.

  • A very interesting interview with Josh Poertner who used to work for Zipp wheels covering all kinds of good stuff about wheels, tyres, frame designs (esp. how they work together as a system) and how dumb pro cyclists are.

  • I'd have thought the best place to start is to identify what it is you're not happy with/hoping to improve over your current wheelset.

  • Don't be silly. The best place to start is will the decals match the frame paintjob!

  • My frame is black and white with shouty logo's, so they all match!
