I'd be tempted to pick up a mix, second hand.

Anyway - check those wheel options above, the last ones, just remove decals and replace with Zipp decals. What I'm going to do :)

  • I think dubtap is broken, can someone turn him off / on at the plug?

The ones that come in at £349.99 seem like really good value. Trying to find out more about them now.

And yes, buying second hand is an option, if I could have anything it would be force shifters and cranks and then rival everything else, but that might push the budget a bit.

  • RS80s all day. Way better than a set of Hope Hoops or Ksyriums.

  • chinese carbon for like 400?

    release the inner dammit

  • Ideally I'd like an alu braking surface. I cannot see any Chinese clinchers with alu braking surfaces. Unless I'm missing something.

RS80s are actually looking very tempting, don't know how I had missed those.

  • have a look at these too:

    http://www.stradawheels.co.uk/shop/velocity-a23-wheelset/ Novatec + CX ray
    http://www.stradawheels.co.uk/shop/h-plus-son-archetype/ 105 + CX ray

Strada tends to be 10% expensive than sourcing components online + TFG wheel build. I'd say spend money on CX rays.

If you can extend the budget then hope hubs in both options. If you are fine with 170mm cranks I have brand new Force Cranks with BB that I don't need anymore.

  • A23s built up on Novatec hubs would come in that price bracket. Definitely easier to service than RS80s / DA C24s etc. with the stupid straight pull spokes.

Paolo off BR does a great wheelbuild.

  • ^^^ Which ones? C24 or the deep sections?

Strada do a Velocity A23 on Novatec hand build for £250. Similar to the Ardennes / Hope build in profile and weight but leaves you with £100 in your pocket.

Edit: beaten to it by Amey and Attaque.

  • Novatec + A23 + Sapim Race seems like a really good deal too. Ah too many choices. Though easier to service, the bling aspect of aforementioned wheels was kind of appealing, but they might be a bit too bling for a black skinny tubed steel frame.

    Amey you have PM incoming.

  • Just Riding Along are good for wheels too, have used them in past to buy phil hubs, met the guys at bespoked bristol, good store, they have front and rear custom wheel configuration tool too.

  • A23 won't look bling on a skinny frame (or fat).

  • but then EVERYONE is building/buying archetype wheels ;)

Sorry, meant the wheels mentioned further up in thread.

  • Black skinny tubes.. Silver rims, hub and spokes, I reckon.

What's stupid about straight pull spokes? RS80 C24s have conventional exposed nipples and even come with a dedicated spoke spanner. The spokes are readily available (though not cheap). No problem to service really.

The quality/weight/performance balance of the RS80s is better than any of the wheelbuilds you'll get for similar money. IMO.

    Soooo 2012.

    Pacentis for S/S 2013

Wait for RS80 to get the new D2 wide rims the DA-9000 C24 have they'll be top dog again.

  • I would agree that Pacenti rims look the dogs. But they're also very pricey.

Swings and roundabouts, I think. Both are good choices.

I have the 7850 C24s and at the time I bought them you could not source a replacement spoke for love nor money. Also worth considering: if you break a rim (it does happen!), you're out to the tune of a new wheel, rather than 50 quid for an A23 rim.

The hubs are Ultegra, which are OK, but I like the ease of just swapping out sealed bearings (though admittedly this presents it's own challenges if the hub shell is very thin!)

Plus they're not especially light: 1,521g. Not saying an A23 build would be lighter, just I don't think this is really a differentiator.

A23 is a wider rim, which is great if you believe the hype (I do).

I'm not some massive A23 fanboi, but they do the job for me e.g. got me around Flanders in one piece. The DA have stayed in the bag pretty much since I bought them.

  • If you want Sunday wheels, you want show off wheels.
