  • Yeah just interested in why. Thought about some a while back, heard they were pretty good but could be a bit meh in the wet. But are light and low rolling resistance.

Decided i'd probably stick to Ultremo ZX though as I've ridden them down birdleways too and through rain/shit conditions and never had a puncture.

Then decided I didn't care for paying £35 a tyre and 60g differnece and will stick with my trust Grand Prix tyres as they're great in all conditions.

  • PR3s are fucking awesome in the wet, if you don't run stupid pressures. The only issue was the fact they cut up. I was going to keep using a 2500-mile-old pair with the new wheels, but each tyre had a BIG cut that had gone through the casing, as well as all the micro-cuts which I didn't give a shit about. They'd held up fine (the puncture resistant layer seems to maintain the structural integrity), but fuck it, new wheels deserve fresh rubber if you've got it to hand, init.

Sounds like the PR4 has sorted out the cut issue without losing any of the other great characteristics, so hopefully they'll be closer to the £20 mark by the time I need to buy any…

    • Fuck me, the tyre was hard to get on by hand (700x23 Michelin Pro 3 Race). I'm guessing this was more a side-effect of it being a tubeless compatible rim, so shallower bed. Unless it's a very warm day, I expect to be judiciously using a plastic lever next time. I've sprained my wrists, FFS.

Had the same problem, I find pushing the bean right in the middle of the rims where it's deeper helped push in that last bit.

But what do I know? I like blowing tyres up for shit and giggle.

  • Yeah, I pushed that bean (sic) into the non-well of the rim like a motherfucker. The pads of my thumbs were burnt by the experience. I had to put Sudocrem on them as even luke-warm water was stinging the fuck out of them for 48 hours afterwards.

  • obligatory htfu quip...

  • Ultremos cut up badly on the sides too. But never a puncture. Likewise were sidelined due to worry on long rides.

Might give these PR4s a try.

£24 a pop here. (if you buy 2)

  • I got my new wheels from Harry Rowland yesterday - nothing to write home about but a good sturdy box section training build. They look nice though, in a utility sort of way - I look forward to many years of riding the crap out of them, with occasional cleaning.

  • It said it weight the same as a 20mm tyres, somewhat doubtful...

^ this. I had a lot of fun riding them through winter 2010/11, but they were in pieces by January.

I think they're the only tyre I've used in cold+wet that does't feel sketchy feels any less sketchy.

I've not tried the Ultremo though. Tyre allegiance is strange. I find myself becoming quite loyal to Vittoria and Michelin brands.

  • How did it compare to the Re-Fuse?

  • It's a totally different type of tyre. The Maxxis is much tougher – it's a commuting tyre whilst the PR is a race tyre. The michelins would probably die quite quickly on city streets just like any soft, high tpi race tyre.

I'm using rubinos in the wet now. Grip isn't anything special but they last, are cheap, feel good and I can put a 28 on the back and run 70psi in both tyres.

  • I switched from pave's to rubinos 25's on the winter wheels at Christmas - there is hardly any noticeable difference in grip, even in the wet. They are a harsher and roll a bit slower, but I can run them at lower pressure and they cost 17 quid each, as opposed to 36 for pave's. No punctures yet either, and no noticeable cuts.

  • Thank Dan, will get Rubino in 25c as the Refuse is expensive now.

  • If you find the Rubino Pros get cuts, go for the 60tpi cheap version. They wont cut up and still have the puncture protection strip.

  • I got mine here: http://www.probikekit.com/uk/tyres-tubes/michelin-pro-4-race-service-course-clincher-road-tyre.html

    mainly because I wanted 25mm.

Also worth mentioning "SPRING5" will get you a fiver off.

  • GP4000S. Done over 10,000miles over two years in london and not a single puncture.

  • Mavic have come up with another variation of the carbon/alloy hybrid clincher wheel

  • Laminate on the sidewall looks the wrong way round; aluminium in tension and carbon in compression. Also, with no metal on the brake track, they won't be able to charge a premium for an Exalith version, which seems like carelessness.

  • Going to be buying my first set of road wheels within the next week. Want something nice as it will be my Sunday best bike. Don't really want Aksium's.

Have about up to £300 to spend or £350 if they're reaaaaaallly good.

Have so far considered Kysrium equipe's or Hope Hoops (Open Pro's).

But it looks like CRC are about to start stocking the Stans 320 version of the Hoops which I'd much rather have than open pros due to rim width.

Is there anything obvious in this price category that I am missing? Or should I just save a bit more and get Ardennes/Hope SEs from HED?

  • What road frame/group did you buy?

  • That Dave Hinde that was in eBay thread a while back. I will be buying Apex, I believe from my research, that the only difference other than ratios, between Apex, Rival and Force are the materials and aesthetics, rather than shifting technology?
