Mine's out. Time for the midgets, some champagne a bottle of baby oil and some blow.

Thinking about building up some Chris King R45s to H+ Archetype's. Will they be an improvement on my Campag Chorus to Mavic Open Pro's?
No. Mavic OPs are, I feel, better rims. The "upgrade" is a deeper section but also heavier rim. CKs versus Chorus? Depends upon which Chorus hubs since Campa has been using the name Chorus for a number of hubs since the 1990s but they've been all good. I prefer the older silver Record hubs but the current ones are also very good. If one already owns a set (of any of these) I don't see the point of an "upgrade".

I got my sleeping on my hoard PJ's ready earlier, ready for a good solid snooze tomorrow:

Just found a bent spoke.
So that might be the issue. :)Oh well. Wouldn't be the first time I jumped off the cliff, before I checked the height.

That's weird. Many moons ago, I got a set of handbuilts from CRC (cheapest way to source the parts at the time). Decided the tension was over-zealous, so backed them off a turn and then retrued myself. Some time later, found a bent spoke in rear wheel.

Well, it's a coincidence. I'm not sure I'd call coincidences weird anymore. Been around the block too many times.

Been around the block too many times.
Maybe that was the problem.

Is drive side or nds longer?
I've got 294/296 which would nds be? -

Have you not take rims width in account that Mavic seemed to be stuck in conventional wisdom?
Open Pro had its day.

@corny - different, rather than better: more weight at the rim, but the 23mm rim subtle handling improvement on corners (and possible imperceptible aero gain); slightly less weight at the hub, but horrible freewheel noise, and proprietary servicing regime. Why not, if you fancy a change...
Bummf
Was thinking of using the Chris King/Archetypes as the summer wheelset, and the Chorus/Openpro's as the winter/training wheelset. Though I have no plans to race anytime soon, the gunk and dirt that accumulated on the wheels this autumn winter means I'm seriously thinking about having more than one wheelset to compensate

I ordered a set of OP's to ambrosio's from Harry Rowland last week - very happy with that. Got some good no-nonsense advice from him and a very good deal. He persuaded me to chose OP's over Excellights as they build up better and make a stronger wheel apparently - also worked out cheaper for me, which is nice.
Decided in the end that having a really good, reliable wheelbuild is more important than fancy/fashionable rim choice. I'm sure I will get plenty of miles out of them. -

^^^I'm in a similar position - knackered a winter wheelset due to abuse and neglect. If I want to true the wobble, I'll have to cut the spokes out, and the rims don't have much life left. Am going to keep it for the ice tyres and drag it out during the shittiest rides next year. Must remember to service the bearings though...
Previous summer wheelset (but fairly robust) now moved to main winter bike duties, and I'm getting something a little lighter for summer climbing madness, fair weather centuries, geared hillclimbs (if the mood ever takes me again), blah blah, plus checking out a 23mm wide rim for the first time.
I'm going to try and have a more regular/systematic approach to wheel TLC after rides, and hopefully these sets will keep me going until I need to switch to a trike, with a few rim replacements :)

ohh get you, fancy rims and everything

Well, I thought it was time. Be interested to see the difference, seeing as I run 23mm @ 90psi on the front normally anyway and can corner aggressively (on OPs or Excellights). Maybe the better profile and possibly even lower pressure will further nip the skittishness in the bud that can plague lighter riders? Dunno. It's my birthday, and I'll wide if I want to.

ha. Nice.
Was thinking today that wider rims would be nice, especially for something like Flanders but hey - whatever, I just wanted mine to be strong and well built, I even went for a 36h rear (EdwardZ will be pleased). I have the show-pony wheels on the S-Works to ride if I feel my self esteem dipping. Or something.

I noticed Evans had 36h OPs for £23 or something the other day. Great deal.
I've not gone Archetype. They're so 2012, init.

Climbing out of the saddle today my bike started making "ziiiip, ziiiip" noises as the brake pads rubbed on the rim of the front wheel.
This is a Zipp 404 with 18 spokes - should I simply accept that it's going to do that, or can a bit more tension stop this? Or would that banjo the rim?
-
• #1474
I think it's the front btw as I have the pads very wide on the rear.
-
• #1475
It's definitely the pads?
