  • The Felt S32 2009 has rear facing dropouts. Not long track ends but not vertical.

  • i think jammy (on here) was getting some ally trackends put on a cannondale road frame, might be worth a pm

  • He was going to but didn't get the frame, nonetheless he should have the contact (who I assume is up North).

  • Surely your average Alu welder could do this? Doesn't necessarily have to be a frame builder right? I used to know a welder who was taught Alu too.

  • Yeah, you don't need to change them.

  • dont needs to swap them, but some more info here

  • I have a friend who is very good with ally welding ( tig ) lives near Cantebury Kent

  • ali is bitcha to weld , but can be done , i can do it but up north

  • ^Agreed espicially heat treated 6061 7075 its more hassle than its worth i welded a bottom bracket shell that cracked and after a few miles it went again!^

  • Fuck yeah.
    No need to weld.
    Woot.

  • When I worked making aluminium frames we had to fill dents sometimes on new un used hydro formed tubes before they were even made into frames! We drilled a small hole into the dent and screwed a bar with a weight on it.The weight was pulled quickly down the bar away from the dent which had the effect of pulling out the dent leaving a slight bulge. The drilled hole was then filled by tig welding which had the effect of slightly sinking the bulge which then was hand sanded down. When finished it was as though there had never been a dent.I appreciate you won't have access to all this gear but I thought I would share my knowledge with you.

  • My seatpost collar is cracked and it's growing. Does anyone have a good recommendation for getting it welded? It's a pista concept so it's part of the frame and I keep leaving off getting it fixed and it keeps growing.

  • one of the guys at wests, had the same problem, max not the big one.
    he got his done somewhere.
    someone will help you

  • Any engineering place should do it for a couple of quid. Got a stem welded up, ground down and the bolt hole re-drilled for a fiver once.

  • Like the title said. I have contacted Vaz and Robets and non of them do it.

I'm looking at an aluminum frame on eBay witch has a cracked lug. When i asked Vaz if I couldn't just replace it with a steel lug he said that aluminum just melts.
I will probably not get an answer in time to help me with the auction but I'm still curious, is there anyone that does repairs to aluminum?

  • The problem tends to be the heat treatment required post weld. Plenty of aluminium welders out there though.

  • shouldnt be too expensive either..

  • Why? Al frames are 10/1p and if it's already cracked, why on earth would you bother?

  • Alu required TIG welding which not all frame repairers have access to. Steel requires brazing which technically a lot easier. I don't think you can weld alu to steel.

  • Why? Al frames are 10/1p and if it's already cracked, why on earth would you bother?

    10/1p?

  • 10 a penny

  • Hmm, an ally frame with a lug- if it's an alan (or a vitus), the lug may be made from a non-weldable alluminium alloy.

  • ISTR that the tubes of the Alan frames were glued to the lugs, that would make welding a very 'interesting' propostion :-)

  • Anyone know anyone who can weld a few small bits of alu?

  • call caspar, they found some old bloke recently

Hi - I'm new to the forum, and I know that this is an old thread - still thought that maybe you would get this message. I'm also looking for an aluminium welder in London. Have thought of renting the kit - but pricey and it's been a couple of years since I welded anything ally.

In this post you say "Talk to Caspar - he's found an old bloke" is Caspar on lfgss? and is there any other way I could find this welding gent?
