welding aluminum is a no... speak to a frame builder...
-
• #29
why is welding aluminium a no? i'm sure there are plenty of people capable who are cheaper than a framebuilder, an aluminium fabrication shop?
-

Welding aluminium is possible, needs to use alternating current tig. Dylan is right as it probably better to replace the whole drop out.
-
• #31
by heating the aluminum in the welding process you weaken the aluminum make it much more liable to crack....
what it means is that the whole frame will need to be re-cured after welding. a right faff.

My brother can weld aluminium.. but since he's related to me of course he's fucking awesome and can weld aluminium. It's possible. Do it. You'll love it. Better than sex with a midget quartet.

Like Dylan said the frame would need to be stress relieved in an oven before and after repair for a proper job, but if it was a small repair on the end of a dropout you'd likely get away with a quick fix.
Still, if it is just a gear hanger damaged you can always get a die-grinder and carve a mount for a cheap replaceable gear hanger. I've done this on a few damaged frames and it works a charm.

maybe it will work maybe will not but better get trying at least i got the change is exactly when the rear fork connect the dropout.
Like what i said if someone knows where i can try it just let me know. -

my 1st post since getting out of the nursery...
So i picked up a nice pantographed Cinelli stem from TDV in the summer (cant go back for a refund now...) and it has some hairline fractures around the handlebar securing bolt - im wandering if these could be welded full, then filed/polished down, and if so if anyone here has the ability/inclination in return for beer perhaps?

Speak to Prav he may be able to advise you.

Hmm, don't think that it's possible or advisable to weld on a safety-critical item like a stem. Dunno offhand what alloy might be used (hence it may be impossible), and it gets some of it's strength from being a forged item. Welding is bound to foul up the material characteristics( making it inadvisable).
Not worth the risk....

'Hairline fractures' = scratches...

I had a Bontrager 2-bolt that definitely had hairline cracks around the bolt holes.
I wouldn't use a stem I had concerns about (ok I would but I bet I'd regret it when my teeth are scattered over the road).

take all the very good advice in previous posts and get a new stem.hilary stone on here is great for secondhand stems.welding a broken/damaged stem is a fools errand and a non starter

dont listen to them
get dental insurance and then get new teeth
-
• #42
turn it into a nice paperweight!

best advice here so far

Turn it into a coat hook.
I'm due to get two new teeth from Guy's Hospital on the eigth of February- the going rate is £2,500 per tooth.
I would predict that a new stem would be cheaper.

I think quill stems are cast, now I know welding cast iron is very tricky long winded process involving hours of preheating and cooling, aluminum is harder to weld in general than steel so I am presuming that welding cast aluminum will be even tougher to (and hence more expensive) to weld.

Forged:

arse!....
ah well thanks for the advice -

I just got a cracked aluminium lug welded by Alpha Welding in Croydon. He only charged me a tenner and did a pretty neat job.
He's done plenty of bikes and is a really pleasant guy. He said the work is guaranteed, and given that he was about to weld some car wheels as I left, I have every confidence of it holding! Added bonus is you can go to Geoffrey Butler cycles down the road and pick up some bargains while you wait!

Anyone got any knowledge on fixing alu dents?

I might be getting hold of a felt s32 2009 model frame for butters, and if my experiment goes swell, I might want to swap the dropouts from vertical to track.
The frame is made from 7005 Aluminium.
I was wondering if it can be done first of all (no knowledge or experience of Ally frames at all), and if so who and how much. Are there any UK builders building in ally?
Any help would be much much appreciated.
I think 7000 seris age hardens without heat treatment but if the crack is near an old welds but I am not an expert on this by a long way.
That's the stuff lynx, personally I'd give that stuff ago depending on the crack.
