Just went to unlock my bike at uni and the key snapped in half in the lock, anyone near ARU that has any experience with this sort of thing?
It's a krypto "keeper chain 880" so I guess the easiest thing to do would be to just cut the chain?
Unless of course we could cut the lock itself in which case I'd just keep using the chain and replace the lock.

Just a thought, but if you can't cut the lock, i.e. have to cut the chain, just cut the link nearest the lock on each side - that way you just lose two links, rather than cut it in half and lose the whole thing...

Hadn't thought of that, good idea.
Will wait and see if anyone can lend me an angle grinder or something, otherwise I'll have to see about hiring one.

Call the City Rangers - 01223 458282 - They can cut it free, if you can show them it's your bike (presume a snapped key will be enough to prove that...)

That's true, I'm not really bothered at all, just found it a bit of an odd time.

Out of interest, did you have to inform the police so the rangers had permission to cut your lock?
The woman on the phone told me that they wouldn't do it unless they got permission from the police, as otherwise they'd be acting on my word and I could just be hoping to steal the bike.

No I just told them where it was and gave them the snapped key.

When some toerag glued the lock on my mrs' bike i called the police and told them i was gonna hacks the lock off. They said ok and gave me a number to quote anyone who tried to stop me. I then sat by the fence on jesus green and hacksawed through a chain on an obvious girl's beachcruiser for half an hour, during which time nobody even asked if it was my bike. Its kind of funny that if i had been nicking it, the police gave me a reference to prove i wasnt nicking it...

Hi Greg, don't need the Deore lever after all but will still give you some £££ for the Wayward shirt. Or perhaps $$$.

Managed to unlock my bike today, went by after a work meeting to check nothing had been nicked, and thought I'd try and wedge the snapped off half on my keys in and see if it would twist, luckily enough it did, and I just went and bought another lock so I can keep using the chain.
Bit of a result really, glad I didn't have to wait until tomorrow for the city rangers to cut it!

Hmm, my current brake setup annoys me due to up/down wobble, will give it a think and let you know.
