  • You gotta try Tinners, imo the best ale in Cornwall

  • 40 Cornish miles is equivalent to about 80 London miles....

  • Ah, OK. I've never been down there, didn't realise it was that hilly.

  • It seemed pretty flat to me ;)

  • You have a shallow personality. ;)

  • Yeah the blue anchor in helston
But i would recommend the Pandora inn near Mylor site: http://www.pandorainn.com/
    That's got some nice views,
    or the http://www.trengilly.co.uk/
this ones down the road from me http://www.eatoutcornwall.com/cornwall-restaurant/details-restaurant.php?pv=5785
and there seems to be a pretty well equipped alcohol shop near me called Constantine stores if your into spirits

  • for something a little different could head into plymouth, has the advanage of being right in between devon and cornwall and houseing the plymouth gin distilery, if you like gin and gin based products...also, the distillery is right on the barbican in the old harbour where the fish market is...some of the best fish and chips you'll ever eat and a little pub called the dolphin hotel in which sells an exeptional pint of bass.

  • Doom Bar is the perfect every day beer. A pint a lunch time quickly turns in to 4 or 5...

For a treat, see if you can find somewhere with "Betty Stogs" on. It's a Skinners brewery ale, and it's bloody wonderful. I know they serve it in the Three pilchards in Polperro.

+1 on the Gin distillery tour too. It's great, and Plymouth is defiantly worth a visit (go on a river cruise and look at the warships ;)

I wouldn't set any distance per day targets if I were you :-)

  • If youre starting in Lands end, then your first pub, is ' The first and last in ' in a place called Sennen.http://www.firstandlastinn.co.uk/history.htmlIf you are going to start that far west, then you should really visit, Sennen cove... theres a pub near the beach too.... plus a nice big hill on your return.....After that, i'd head through, st.Just , through Botallack ( amazing coast line !..... tin mines )Through, Morvah, Zennor ( bleak ), up to st ives.... round through carbis bay, lelant, to St erth village... along the river to Relubbus... up through goldsithney.... down to perranuthnoe, then marazion ( st michael mount )..... back to penzance....and finally Lamorna cove...... little gem .right thats my holiday planned.....but they are im sure lots of other beautiful circuits all over Kernow.:)I cant think of anywhere better to chill out and cycle.... oh and take a waterproof.... cornwall is a pennisula.... it rains.... :)

  • oh sorry, dont know about the beers thou.....

  • Tribute is a fine, fine beer and the St Austell brewery has a fine pub attached to it where you can drink it.

In Penzance, the Admiral Benbow is worth a visit, unlike pretty much anything else in that town (sorry hillbilly).

If you can, watching a play at the Minack thatre is **highly **recommended. Book in advance on the t'internet to avoid disappointment.

Tate in St Ives is worth a visit too. if you are there, there is a vegan / macrobitotic place on the end of the quayside that does cheap and yummy salads full of bean sprouts the like. Delicious. Their hemp and chilli dressing is a winner.

  • Oh and one other thing - fuck the eden project, head for the lost gardens of heligan instead.

If you're looking to go down this way, heed what Mashton wrote - the Benbow is a good pub - it's proper. And a bit odd too. The lido is just down the road too and is worth a look even if you're not into swimming.
And Heligan is fucking brilliant. Take a picnic, smuggle in some booze and spend the day there, it's really worth a visit.

  • also Nhat - check this out

  • Haha, ask for advice for a three-day holiday and get advice for a three-year holiday. Great stuff, love it.

  • Tinners Arms, Zennor. In a very beautiful village in between Lands End and St Ives on the north coast road.

North coast road there is one of the most beautiful in Britain... pub does great cider, DH Lawrence wrote some of Women in Love in there, and Haile Selassie lived in the village when he was in exile!

It's a great plan... and you'll get pushed by the wind all the way!

  • ooh and I forgot, porthcurno too.

Admiral Benbow is quaint... is hillbilly from penzance ??

well Oliver, are'nt we all just so helpful ;)

  • You're all lovely. :)

  • Yeah the blue anchor in helston

Allegedly... each Flora day (May 1st i think) the crazy pagan folk of Helston drink as much 'Spingo' as possible. Spingo is a brew of the Blue Anchor, and it might or might not contain a few mushrooms in that particular batch!

    ;-)

When I was there (2002 i think) the landlord had declared that if anyone could drink 10 pints of the stuff they'd become proud owners of the pub! I left when people started climbing trees and howling at the moon!

Fucking crazy, but i love Cornwall.

'Spingo' is also the name of a letter game:

(And much else besides, as I discovered when Googling just now.)

  • Ha. Probably quite a good game after a yard or two of the Helston brew!

  • I think flora day is the 7th or the 8th of may
i know because its allways around or on my birthday

Its to big and full of little helston groms nowadays though so id give that one a miss

  • 'big' ...relative to which village fete exactly?!?!

    ;-)
