  • The stranger the camping the more expensive. I need to get into that business.

On subject, if you are heading west, make sure you try the cider too, can't recomend any in particular but the best stuff is bought in plastic gallon bottles.

  • Are you meaning Beer in Devon? ...and are you intending to cover some serious miles or just a bit of pottering about?

  • Well, I'm of mulitple minds, really. The first thought was Cornwall, then thinking maybe doing a trip from lands end to beer (more than three days), then thinking maybe devon. We're easy. We're just in it for the booze and the scenery. All though the cornish sea seems a better deal than devon...

  • I don't think there's much difference.. Apart from there are more Cornish people in Cornwall :S

  • Hmmm.... well I was thinking that if you finished or started about 50 miles east of Beer, it's really beautiful country foe one thing, especially if you're camping, but the main thing is I know of an unbelievably good pub there. Fresh pasties on tap and numerous types of cider to help you on your way. Pretty easy to get to I think if you get a train down to Wareham.

  • Fresh pasties on tap

Sounds like they're doing it wrong...

  • Richard, this is golden knowledge, please share. You never know when I'll need to do another trip...

Hey, liquid pasties are better than they sound....

  • My mum lives in Penzance.

  • is she a pirate?

  • Ladies like wine innit? http://www.camelvalley.com/vineyard-tours

If not, agree with mooks, Rattler FTW!

I just sent you some info in a PM, hope it's a bit useful

I've managed to avoid doing the Rattler Challenge so far, but I'll be back down again soon and I don't think I can hold out much longer.

Most I've managed so far is three and a half pints - which sounds pathetic - but I was ruined.

  • Funnily enough I was in Beer at the weekend. First time I've ever been and it's lovely. Can highly recommend both the food and the beer in The Barrel of Beer. You can't miss it as Beer itself is pretty small. If there are cooking facilities at the Youth Hostel I'd also recommend a fishing trip to catch your own tea. You could quite easily cycle over to Lyme Regis from there which is also quite charming.

  • ...in that order.

  • Pasties (if with animal flesh inside) and fish are out for a vegan, folks.

40 miles a day? I can see how you're really prioritising the pints. Sounds like a great concept for a holiday!

On the subject of beers, I was a fairly short-sighted vegan for years concerning beers, but I've been vegan for over ten years now and there's no point in continuing to be inconsistent. But in the countryside it can be difficult, because you can basically be left with some crap factory beer as your only choice.

oi oi, I'm a country boy and we out in the sticks pride ourselves on local ales.. I haven't touched a crap factory beer in years!

  • I have to recommend the Blue Anchor in Helston, the Lizard. It's got it's own brewery out the back and is one of the oldest pub in england. it's ace. I remember having quite a few of the best fucking pints and having good chats with locals and then a very good kebab in the place opposite. Also, amazing mushy pea fritters and fish and chips round the corner.

The sea round there is truly bitter and violent, and there is highly unusual geology, if your interested in that type of thing: there's Serpentine(only-found-in-about-2-places-on-earth-type-of-bright-green-knarly-rock-action) crags all over the place.

  • This pub I've been on about does two types of pasty - meat and non-meat.
Whether the non-meat ones have got any dairy in them I don't know, but they don't put anything in them that had a face.

What I mean is the choice of vegan beers. As very few ales are vegan, a crap factory beer can be the only choice. I love the countryside. It's a very small drawback, all things considered, that the beer situation can be slightly iffy for a vegan.

Probably some sort of cheese pasties, I would think. But unless you share your golden knowledge on-thread, we can't Google for the menu. ;)

I understood but kind of wanted to be angry with you city types while I'm actually out here in the countryside.. Just out of curiosity, what makes the production of an ale non-vegan?

Would Sam Smith's in Yorkshire be ruled out because he still delivers his barrels by horse and cart?

    Again, purely curious.

Menu?! The menu is pasties and cider or, for those who like something a bit different, pasties and cider.

"Ermmm, cough cough, would I be putting you out awfully if I wanted something *very *different? You see, I'm from the big city, and ..."
