But if you are pro equality you are by definition a feminist therefore you should admit it (maybe "I am pro equality so I am obviously by definition a feminist, but I am not keen on some of the connotations of the word so I don't like to describe myself as such"). If you deny being a feminist then you are an arsehole, either because you don't believe in equality or because you are too thick to understand a pretty simple definition.

No, no and thrice no! Being in favour of equality does not make you a feminist by definition. Trying to claim that anyone who is not a feminist does not believe in equality (which is logically equivalent) has a wide range of negative effects:

• It alienates people who may not want to identify with a word that has baggage to do with stereotypes, shifting definitions and radicalism (although some of this is a strawman view of feminism). There are few better ways of alienating people than trying to tell them what they are or how they should identify.
  
• It belittles the actual tangible work of self-identified feminists who are actively campaigning for female rights, by trying to claim that everyone who has a passing interest in equality is a feminist.
  
• It makes people downright uncomfortable by trying to claim a principle for a certain movement. In a similar way, PETA (People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals) are implictly trying to claim that anyone who doesn't subscribe to their viewpoint is not "ethical", simply by virtue of their name.

This link that dst posted has it exactly right. You can be awesome, pro-equality and pro-women (even pro-feminist) while not being a feminist.

Is the fact this discussion is taking place here an epic win for thread content equality?

Feminism is about equality for women. For women to be equal they must be equal to men, therefore men are equal to women, therefore if you are a feminist you believe in equality. Therefore if you believe in equality you are a feminist. I really don't see the issue.

I'm guessing your degree wasn't in a subject that dealt with formal logic then. All X are Y (all feminists believe in equality) is not logically equivalent to All Y are X (all those who believe in equality are feminists). Draw the Venn diagram if it helps. The set of people who believe in equality can quite happily be larger than the set of feminists.

The rest of your post is rendered daft by that simple misunderstanding. This, however is true:

Yes, if you are fighting for women in those areas where their rights are less than men's. (Glad you caught that bit, as it was really the crux of my post)

NO! Check your logic. It's perfectly possible to fight for equality by fighting for men's rights in those areas where they are lacking (or the rights of ethnic minorities, the disabled, transgender etc etc etc.). None of this would make you a feminist (although it might make you more likely to be pro-feminist).
