Worn Look cleats finally gave in on the way in to work today. Cue one legged spinning/panic hilarity on a couple of occasions. Apologies to everyone on the OKR that had to avoid me.
Still, at least I've accidentally mastered the one-footed skid.

worn cleats are annoying, but not as much as when one screw comes undone leaving your shoe permanently secured to the pedal

Hairy last couple of commutes on these. WAT.

Shimano SPD SL Yellow. Feel still fully functional. Both outside wear indicators gone. Inside nearly all remaining. Front remaining but partially split; I assume I press this into the pedal when engaging. Never had this wear pattern before. Besides that I have obviously gone bow legged could somebody please explain how they function? Why are they still engaging and what potential dangerous unclipping scenario? Thank you.

The yellow bits are sacrificial. They wear out whilst the bit of the cleat you actually need to clip into the pedal (black) is protected. Personally I found you can ignore those wear markers if you keep an eye on the wear on the cleat. If there is no yellow left then you'll be walking on the black bit which is the bit that actually clips into the pedal. Obviously this then becomes potentially dangerous.

Thank you for that.

Thank you for that.
yes i'm a twat and have been riding with worn cleats. putting any power down will result in foot ripping out of pedal. not good when i need to put the hammer down to get in front of some traffic or whatever. now fixed thankfully.

SPD-SL will keep going for ages after walking pods have gone, its the lips at the front and back you want to keep an eye on for wear/thinning. I use the Shimano cleat covers to keep them going as long as possible.

Yep I am a twat.
SPD-SL yellow. I knew they needed changing as the yellow bits had gone right down and the lip at the back had worn. I noticed clipping in was not fluid and unclipping was too easy. Unclipped today when the power was down and almost ended up on the deck. Could have been serious.
A trip to Evans at lunchtime before the ride home -

Buy load of spare one online, go for blue if you want less float.

12 years old and still going strong, nicely broken in now

Try that with an Atac cleat.
Thought it's worth changing just for the bolt.

Looks like the steel inner sole is about to pop out at the front.
Superglue holds it together at the back. -

^^^ Thats nuts.. how they last so long?

would be replacing cleats so frequently if you replaced them everytime the yellow plastic came off!

They've got far too much life left for his weight weenie leanings.

Plus, he hardly rides his bike these days, anyway.
Or perhaps a different shoes that's deep enough?
Or get SPD.
