its there only because i would have to take the grip off to get to the lever then the disk, calliper and wiring
but the thought of using it doesnt come into my head so it might as well not be there
i didnt mean to sound like i was getting mouthy in the who are you q
its just a personal prefrence and i dont know why i got involved it this stupid debate again

Yeah, that's me. I've been running the piercing studio in nunhead since '86. Platinum Years.
For a fee, I could adjust BMMF. Not in a technical sense.

To the untrained eye it looks like you're running fixed and people will think you are super cool?! Or...
But to the trained eye, you look like a cunt? Discuss...

The most annoying thing about ss (freewheel) riders with no back brake is the fact they ride so f**king slowly,'cause they cant stop, getting in my way!
If you're gonna ride that slow, you may as well walk. -

It's off to the Cycle Speedway with you then !

I saw one yesterday.
I saw another today at London Bridge.
WTF is with that?
For avoidance of doubt, I am referring to people who run a freewheel with one brake.
You know... this bugs me.
Whatever happened to... "It's all cycling, it's all good".
Who are you to say that someone is good enough to ride their bikes with only a front brake? Especially given so many people ride on here with only a rear (brakeless) and there is greater braking efficiency in a front brake than a rear.
Elitism strikes again.
Everyone is welcome to get on a bike and ride, and as experience and skill comes with time and practise no-one should be mocked for not yet being up there in the stratospheric heights with your good self. In fact... shock, horror... they may not even care to be there if this is the kind of thinking it represents.

Well... hate to break it you chaps, but there are plenty of riders out there who think fixed gear riders look like a bunch of posing twats (not including me, I hasten to add). I ride FG if I want to spruce up my cadence, but I much prefer SS and ride this 90% of the time. Why? Coasting down big hills, undertaking an inch from the kerb without smashing a pedal (I know... but it's useful sometimes), I can go on longer rides on SS (a SS century is tough enough for me - I can't imagine it would be much fun on FG), maintenance simplicity, easy unweighting over speed bumps and hazards etc etc. Frankly I love it, and as a guy in my 40's I still get excited every time I get on my bike. Now if other people prefer FG, or a zillion gears all power to them... whatever gets you on your bike. Way I see it, if anybody thinks their cycling preference should be a universal law, then they probably ARE cunts. "To the trained eye..?", FFS...

Hey, I agree with the more the merrier, and the safer the roads become for us. It is a problem, though, (jokes aside about slow riders) when you get someone crashing into you, as has happened to me, because they have NO brakes and cant control their bike like that. I have also been behind a ss rider who was riding like a maniac down clerkenwell rd, through the traffic, crashes into a ped crossing the road through stationary traffic, and hits the back of a cab. Mainly because he was riding like a tit, but also because he couldnt stop quick enough due to front only brake, and ss.

I get the impression some people are going SSOB (SingleSpeedOneBrake) for 'the look'.
This is stupid (its just my opinion, but I'll stand by it)
If you ride brakeless, without a helmet, and with 1" wide bars TBH I could'nt give a flying feck, as long as its been considered with regards to skill level, conditions, safety etc. I'm willing to bet there are loads of people on here riding safer than me, without the front caliper, pricey helmet etc.. I use. Simply because they are better riders, and know the limitations of themselves and their bike.
I dont care what set-up people ride, as long as they have considered it for the right reasons.

Whoa David, I'm genuinely quite taken aback by your post. I would hope that people who have met me on this board including yourself did not think I was elitist.
Maybe my post was a bit too judgemental. :s

Fixed riders need to HTFU and stop moaning like little boys.
Freewheel riders are human beings too.:)

I ride single speed around town Vee Vee. I have 2 brakes though.

I was sitting outside the Southbank centre waiting for Critical Mass to form, watching the early arrivals in order to spot friends when they turned up.
There was a chap on what looked to be a nice track bike, running brakeless.
Then he started freewheeling, which confused me slightly, until I spotted the coaster brake arm attached to the non-drive chain stay.
So, he has, presumably, the braking ability of nobrakes, but the ease of use of a coaster brake.
Plus his bike has the super clean nobrakes look.

It is an opinion shared by many including myself, and its not elitism, its concern for the safety of others on the road, and if anything....pity, for I think some of these "new" cyclists don't realise just how much they are endangering themselves by riding with this set up.

It was a bit and the comments that followed. It was quite amusing as well as I've been learning to use my front brake a lot the past couple of weeks after doing some mad scary skidding with my back brake and to be fully ready in an emergency.
