My sense of pity, comes from seeing 2 people already this year crash or cause themselves injury riding that set up without the relevant skill level needed to control it, one went over the handlebars at a set of traffic lights as he had to stop suddenly for pedestrians, the other did a mini endo and fell into a parked car. BUT....I think riding brakeless fixed without being able to control it properly, and riding fixed with no foot retention are both equally as stupid, and most of the time equally as dangerous.
Yes I once was a newbie to fixed, just like anyone else who rides, hence why I don't look down on new cyclists or anyone who's new to riding fixed with any kind of elitism at all, in fact I am always one of the first people to offer to teach people things, lend tools, or help out with something, because as far as I am concerned we are all cyclists, and we all need to look out for each other. -

The problem is, some people are a danger to myself and others by riding ss+no brake. Thats the point.

Let put it this way, we seen nodders commuting with expensive mountain bike that have big fuck-off disc brakes that can't slow down quicker than a brakeless freewheel bicycles, I'm just worried about those who pose a risk to everyone, regardless of brakes or not.
don't let it get to you mate, you'll see them everyday, they'll always be people with poorly made bicycles, best way is to simply deal with it and enjoy riding your bike.

Why should you care either way so long as they are not a danger to you? And who are you to assess whether someone else possesses such skill level, in the conditions for that purpose?
Not my place to assess. I would hope people did this themselves, before using public roads.
Now the circumstances under which I choose to do this, and my level of skill, blah blah blah... well it's all my business. Who granted you with any interest in my choice to ride like this? Would you care to say I am a danger to you? Upon what basis?
I dont know, you would have to assess wether or not you are a danger yourself, as stated above.
I dont cycle to work if the conditions are very icy and I have summer tires mounted. I consider it unsafe for both myself and other road users. I may be making the wrong judgement, but the thought process is there.
It's all cycling, it's all good.
This is the overiding thruth ;)
(NB: Sorry if I'm a bit 'high and mighty' about this but last week someone who had'nt considered their set-up (MTB with non-functional front brake) nearly put me and my son (3yo in childseat) in a ditch)

Whoa David, I'm genuinely quite taken aback by your post. I would hope that people who have met me on this board including yourself did not think I was elitist.
Maybe my post was a bit too judgemental. :s

Really? How are the brakeless freewheel bicycles slowing down? Have they stolen VeeVee's feet?

Personally I thought they were underwhelming and exceptionally boring, at least when I crash its either spectacular, or funny!
Honestly some of these newbies just don't know what it means to crash with style :p. -

On the 'safe cycling' debate, I've just started riding with headphones in, after saying for ages that it was unsafe. I was talking bollocks.
Why should you care either way so long as they are not a danger to you? And who are you to assess whether someone else possesses such skill level, in the conditions for that purpose?
When I ride SS I ride without a rear brake. It's a track frame, I can't fit a rear brake.
Now the circumstances under which I choose to do this, and my level of skill, blah blah blah... well it's all my business. Who granted you with any interest in my choice to ride like this? Would you care to say I am a danger to you? Upon what basis?
As for CrazyJames's sense of pity at seeing such a thing... wow, patronising.
What gets me is that you are all ranting and raving about it... maybe we should do a survey? "How many times have you been hit by an out of control SS rider with no rear brake?".
I mean... consider what you're saying, were you not once a newbie yourself? Are you now the font of all cycling knowledge and wisdom? Are you not still learning each day like the rest of us?
I don't really care whether or not someone has a rear brake or whatever their setup is, I do think that the kinda of posturing and ranting on the forum is reflective of a narrow view though... so shoot me if I call you all on it.
It's all cycling, it's all good.
