  • I'm in Odense, so it'll have to be somebody else.
I'll try to get a picture next time I'm at the skip though.

  • I'm looking at ways to fit a cargo fork with a smaller wheel to an old road bike, I want to have a platform that can take a large basket and keep it all low.

    Any suggestions?

  • Does anyone know which other Homebase stores are offering this?
According to the London Green website there's 20 stores in total.

It'd be great to get a list going (he said hopefully)...

  • They manager told me they trialled it successfully in Golder's green branch and now East Acton. I also saw the 20 stores on their website mentioned

  • I can now confidently say that Kidbrooke isn't one of them! : (

  • How do you book the ones in the E. Acton branch? That's my closest B&Q, so it would be handy! On google search/ B&Q website I only seem to see a national phone number...

  • You just turn up. Speak to staff and if it's free it's yours for 24 hours

  • Homebase on Foss Island in York offers it.

  • Seemed to have nothing but huge boxes to deliver today. Nice and top heavy!

  • I need to buy a cargo bike, a bullitt, to use it for work.
My question is: is better with internally geared hub or with external gears?

  • I've never used one with external gears but the internal hub ones I use at work seem like a bit of a nightmare to maintain. There's always something wrong with at least 1 of the the 4 of them. Could just be due to mechanical incompetence from my boss though!

  • Who's going to be doing the maintenance?
If you're not, and you don't have to pay for it an IG hub is probably fine.
If you're going to fettle it yourself, I'd go with external - much easier to work on for a home mechanic imho.

  • We've put 6 years and probably 10000 miles through the 7 speed nexus on our 40kg Nihola, mostly with at least another 100kg on board. It's not missed a beat.

I like it. Even if only for being able to change down waiting at the lights.

  • FYI that new old-style butcher's bike is still for sale at £200 in Liverpool. Looks tidy, if a bit yellow. http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/butchers-bike-/232432029156

  • Actually, being able to change gear when stationary is great. Another upside of an internal hub is that when the stands inevitably get fucked and the bike starts toppling over when it's windy, there's nothing to damage.

  • Get external gears, more range and easier to bodge if not working properly..we have 13 bullits and only the shimano steps ones have igh,on the normal ones we have removed the igh in favor of a mtb drivetrain (mind we use them daily with around 110kg of load and it s fine)

  • Very happy with the nexus 8 on my Kr8; full chaincase is a bit of a pain in the arse to get the back wheel out etc. (but handy for cycling in civvies.) OTOH, I've only had to remove the wheel once or twice in the three years I've had the bike; other than changing the shifter cable once it's has basically zero attention.

  • Not much of a problem on the Nihola, it's a trike, it only topples over if you try silly cornering speeds without anyone in the front.

Sitting on the seat changing gear at the lights is two blobs of fun you can't have on a derailleured 2 wheeler.

  • I can confirm their is a Christiana looking bike at the Catford/Beckenham Homebase.

  • I'd buy that just can't get to Liverpool to collect it.

  • Now that my twins are just about to start school round the corner it seems like our bakfiets (a Workcycles Kr8) may be best off with someone else; much as I love it, it seems like a bit of a luxury to keep it just for the supermarket run. What's the best way to go about selling this? I gather they hold their value reasonably well, and you should be able to get 2/3rds-3/4s of the original price; does that accord with folks' experience?

  • London Green Cycles sells used ones so perhaps give them a ring to check?

    Then Gumtree?

  • Post it on facebook in family cycling, hackney bike library, hop on board, london cycling and so on. They don't come up used all that often in good condition so if yours is someone will snap it up I'm sure.

London Green Cycles might rip you off a bit as they want to make a profit on it obviously.

  • Ta for the suggestions; my only problem is that I'm in the Midlands rather than London's famous London these days, so it's slightly trickier if people want to view. Will wash the bike and take some photos then give it a go.

  • What price for forumengers? I totally want to say yes, but probably can't :(
