  • Saw Orbital at Printworks the weekend before the first lockdown and unsurprisingly the missus and I both got covid that week. Worth it though.

  • Oh yeah, remember I bitched last week about going to see DakhaBrakha in Brighton and getting the date wrong? I went on the right date last Friday and have been bedridden with Covid since the weekend.

  • Due to an administrative error I have two tickets for mclusky at the Lexington on Sat 10th. It’ll be bloody great but I can’t go.

But you can! £20 each or best offer.

  • Take him up on the offer McLusky are the shiz.

  • Seconded - gutted I missed their December gig and am away for this one too - do not let these tickets go begging! If there were a just God, Mclusky would be headlining Wembley for a week.

  • Ill get right back to you.. i might be up for this

  • Tickets just bought for Godspeed You! Black Emperor at the Troxy in September. Not been to that venue before - looks quirky

  • I've only been there twice, once was to see GYBE years and years ago. They renovated it since and it's really nice.

  • Saw them there a few years ago and remember it felt like a good venue for them, I stayed down in the lowered (sunken?) standing bit where I think the stage did feel quite high above, but for Godspeed that's no bad thing I don't think. It's another gig that when it gets closer I'll be annoyed I didn't get a ticket but right now I feel I've seen them enough times so don't need to go to every gig they put on. Just wish Silver Mt. Zion would do something these days.

  • once was to see GYBE years and years ago

I was at that gig, twas good. Bit peeved that Troxy has now become the proxy (for Brixton) now that I don't live 400m away...

btw - sound is a bit muffled and unclear unless you're downstairs, preferably in front of the balcony, then it's very good.

  • There's been a lot of stuff there recently and I can only assume it's because of the Brixton Academy situation where a lot of bands would usually go? Same with a lot more at Kentish Town Forum as well.

Anyone in the business know if that's the case or if it's just more bands I'm interested in have started to pop up at more varied places recently?

  • Thanks - sound may be a bit muffled in any event by late 50s hearing loss!

  • That and EartH in hackney seems to be getting loads of gigs. Can't say I miss Brixton to be honest. If you were anywhere close to the middle or back, you could just hear echoes of cunts having chats at the back.

  • I was at that gig, twas good

From what I remember of it, it was excellent. I think we were say upstairs about midway though. Would have preferred to be down the front.

  • One minor Troxy wrinkle is the booze situation. Just a few pubs in the vicinity (Craft, Ship, Queen's Head), all of which get utterly rammed when there's any band that draws a decent crowd. Pro tip if you want to get a seat and have a £4.80 pint beforehand is the Crown, an absolute shithole old man boozer which only takes cash and just shows horse-racing to ageing drunks. But it's close, cheap and nobody seems to have cottoned on that it's there yet.

  • Yeah I never got on with Brixton, I see a lot of people saying it's an amazing venue but there's always something that lets me down at every gig I've been to there. Saying that though, EartH didn't seem great for the couple of gigs I saw there. Think it was too wide for me.

  • Brixton is (was) a brilliant venue. Had some amazing nights there. Troxy is also excellent, but not so handy for those of us down south. Other most used alternative is Ally Pally which is too much of a PITA for most gigs.
Does anyone know what the situation is with the Academy re-opening?

  • My mate runs one of the major venues in Brum and tells me industry insider chat is that they will never get their licence back under the current ownership/mgmt, so not looking good.

Brixton was always my favourite venue in town, but there were occasional gigs were the sound was inexplicably dreadful. Last gig I saw there was Parquet Courts - had been looking forward to it for ages, but it was so bad we had to walk out halfway. Also, they never gave a shit about the pickpocketing, which happened every night (I just got done once, but heard about it a lot).

  • Ah - that's a bummer. Hope something gets sorted as we are missing a venue like that down here.

  • earth is soo baddddd i hate that its getting more shows, its way too hard for anything that involves more than one instrument

  • I’ve been avoiding it but eventually there’ll be a gig I really want to go to.

In fact, I think Dry Cleaning tickets I have for April are at EartH. My luck has run out.

  • The sound in the main hall at Earth is dreadful. It’s an old theatre with zero sound baffling and it booms everywhere. Portals festival takes place there now, which annoys me because the line up is usually excellent. If These Trees Could Talk are headlining there in May, they’ve never played the UK before and if the sound is as bad as it usually is then I’ll be sooo pissed off.

Still not as bad as Ally Pally though.

  • I still have the mclusky tickets btw. Only a week away now, so if anyone wants them get in touch or I’ll stick them up elsewhere.

  • Nothing's been announced yet, but Einstürzende Neubauten in Sept will be going on sale this week. *taps nose
