ACL query: would typically involve a torsional injury accompanied by a pop and immediate swelling. That is textbook but not always so clear cut. Get it checked out by physio or decent GP / sports physician. Try to reduce swelling and increase range of movement asap.
Knee v handlebar: likely subchondral bruising. From 30deg bend there is more PFJ contact hence pain with bending. Can take a while to settle even with rest. If swelling and pain ++ may be better to skip mtb race.
PM specifics as always or email michael@cyclephysio.co.uk

I still have today, Thursday, Friday and Saturday to 8pm - if the pain and swelling is gone, do you think it's ok to ride? I'm skipping the bike today to give it some rest.

Having some non riding related pain at the minute!
Today at the physio I'd been doing some things to get my shoulder strong again after an older injury, I was holding a small weight, went to go and out it back on the rack when I lost my balance and stumbled, my knee made a noise that sounded to me like a bang and initially there was a shooting pain.
I let the trainer guy know about it and he sat me down, said we had to stop and wouldn't share for the rest of the hour etc but that it sounded to him like I'd torn or
Partially torn my ACL and that I needed to get it seen to.This is really worrying to me, I'm still in pain when I'm lying and my knee feels incredibly unsteady.
I'm quite sure this was a false alarm because I managed to walk 10+ hilly miles this morning, I was in pain for most of it and it was a silly move but I doubt I'd even have been able to if I'd torn my ACL.

I don't get this. The forum often has people claiming they have torn this or ruptured that and then they go and say they have just finished a 100mile ride, hilly 10 mile walk, etc
Why not play it safe and rest?

I know, I wasn't in a good place this morning and I just went and did it, not a smart move I know.
Really quite a long story behind it but that has no place here.

Fair enough. I'm just very overcautious when it comes to injury I suppose.

If no pain and no swelling then no reason not to race. Would expect it to be sore next morning and maybe for few day after when loaded such as down stairs.

Currently no pain when walking around, and very little swelling. Still not feeling 100pc "right", but think I'll race - carefully.

Someone should start putting together a 'yoga for cyclists' session...focus on all the decent leg and core stuff. It helped my shoddily-constructed lower back no end
I recommend you read this: http://www.wintertraining.co.uk/why-is-yoga-good-for-cyclists/And of course, there is a thread: http://www.lfgss.com/thread31438-9.html
Not sure if Rebecca's still running classes in London...

My knee clicks at the back of the knee, feels like a string being strained right in the hinge (these are deffo the technical terms). It doesn't really hurt, just clicks with every revolution. I have had a month off riding to see if it goes away, just wondering if anyone else has had this kind of thing and what they did to get rid of it? Thanks

Anyone getting knee issues in the cold? The knee I had surgery on has become stiff and clicky, the other is fine. Bit worried about the rebuilt one but don't know if I'm being over-sensitive...

wrap up them knees! I always overdress my knees, easiest way to keep them happy

I'm due my 4th session of physio tonight due to knee pain that has kept me off the bike (other than my 1 mile commute) for nearly 2 months now. It's starting to really get to me, doesnt seem to be getting any better.
Physio reckons i've got some damaged cartilage. I'm not sure what will happen when I get to the end of the 6 sessions that Bupa agreed to pay for.

Stop riding?
In all seriousness, assuming the injury is not being helped by riding, then even riding 2 miles a day will stop it healing. At least attempt to give it time to recover?

it hurts more off the bike than on to be fair, walking, sitting still for too long. Fun.

thedopestghost - Keep us updated. I went through the same myself.
My knee is still giving me hell - after 2-3 years of grief. Just keep stretching and try to find a bike fit.
I find certain compound stretches work absolute wonders for my knees and you'll be fine for a few days but If I don't stretch sometimes I can't sleep the pain is that bad.

My knees (especially the right knee) were fucked for about 6-8 months. Had physio, was given stretches, did them, went to an osteopath, did stretches.
Didn't do a fucking thing. I was off the bike and stretching three times a day for a good couple of months. What sorted me out was going to get a couple of sports massages. Honestly like night and day. Proper worked me over, better than any stretch you could do yourself. This is just my experience of knee problems, yours may vary.

Mine got better from running. It's supposed to be the other way around, but it sorted me out.

Ive been given some exercises to build up muscles on the other side of the knee and some stretches that hurt quite a bit.
I'm actually going to get a bike fit with Pedal Precision on Friday. I'm looking forward to it.

Yeah, after my legs started feeling better (and then slightly worse as I began cycling again) I got a bike fit inc. footbeds. I've since got new bike shoes and found that what made a HUGE difference for me was footbeds with proper arch support. Tried a ride with the cleats in the same place and standard Shimano shoe footbeds and knees were hurting after one commute. Got new footbeds and back to normal.

Physio said last night that as we havent seen any improvement yet he is referring me to a knee doctor, possibly getting a steroid injection in the knee and then back on to physio

I get it and ignore it. It's OK in summer.

I have osteoarthritis in both knees, they have both undergone menisectomies. When the weather is cold the ache. Wear knee warmers, and try embrocation as well.
Also yoga has been proven to help with arthritic knees, helping with quad strength and patellar alignment.

DJ - do you have patella alignment issues and woudl this happen to be mal-trackign patellas or something else?
I have mal- trackign ones and I've never really been able to sort them properly so cyclign is fine but running (which I miss) is off the cards. I never thought of yoga before. Do you have direct experience of yoga having a positive outcome inthis respect?
Have you checked mumsnet?
