Thank you
Odd thing was cycling was fine overall, just annoying that walking hurt. But things will get better.
I have no issues with cycling either, but the only pain I get is from walking downstairs.

Should I get mine looked at then? I figured like most injuries/STI's it would disappear, but my knee is still shitty after months of on/off, mostly on pain.

I had mine rebuilt after shattering the back of the patella. The surgeon (who had never seen an injury like mine in 30 years of surgery) pulled pieces of my broken patella out of three little holes that he made in my knee joint. He then sewed up all the holes that the pieces of bone had left in the cartilage.
I still have a kneecap. I can still cycle, run and even ski.
I can't play contact sports.

Please clarify. Your GP shouldn't have injected the patella tendon with steroid, certainly not as a first line treatment as there is a potential rupture risk in weight bearing tendons. They may have injected around it or done other things like a bursal injection which is often very effective but may not address the cause of symptoms.
Relative rest and best wishes with your recovery.
No idea where was injected as I wasn't watching as I have a fear of needles. But had a few stabbing pains and have a dressing to remove tomorrow. The dressing is taped on gauze.

How long ago was it? Things have advanced with replacement knees. Also found that ski resorts are awesome with joint injuries. My shoulder was injured and the gp I saw was right with the diagnosis and what needed to be done. The private docs sorted it all out though.

4th December 1998.
He was planning on giving me a carbon fibre kneecap.

He'd have to be careful with the torque.

Knee pain is back again. This is seriously getting me down now.
Had bikefit and have had physio. Knee seriously started to feel better after the course of physio (I was off the bike, well long rides anyway) had 2 months of physio then last week I went out for 2 rides no longer than 30 miles each and my knee then flared up from there.
Could it be a case of I did too much?
I'm starting to think that moving to speedplays with their endless float was a bad idea and that SPD's forcing my legs into a certain position will be better again.
I've gone back through my physio notes and am now icing up and stretching as much as possible.

^ Fuck, that's exactly what I'm worrying about. Used to do 30 milers with no issues at all, 2-3 times a week. Now I'm out for 15 and I start to feel my right knee. It might be just in my head, but I'm well careful these days. All I do now is 15 milers once a week, max, which is a good 85 miles left to do a century, which I really want to get done at some point
patience patience patience*
*Fucking shit knees!

Work with your fitter (if they are good) and physio, and don't give up on the speedplay yet- even if you want to take all the float out, they are still the best pedals, as your fitter will be able to gradually "creep" up on your optimal twist in a fitting session- adjusting the breakout angle, and possibly even going for unequal low-angle float. I am assuming that you are on speedplay zero's??? the float on the X series is of course non-adjustable.

Scherrit thanks for the reply. At the moment I've got the cleats which i can't dial in and have endless float. Would zeros make a lot of difference.
Funny enough i spent a good hour -hour and a half last night stretching and today I've been fine so far far(haven't been cycling) but im starting to think I may have to stretch every single day for this amount of time . Is this normal behaviour?
-
• #671
Depends which muscle you're stretching.
-
• #672
I'm stretching hamstrings, thighs, upper calves, lower calves, it band (when i can be arsed) and lower back. Every morning.
Hamstring 3 times a day

Would it help to cross train as well? Build core strength and re-learn squats/pedaling technique from scratch?
-
• #674
i started running and swimming to cross train and part from helping for my cycling, I also enjoy it immensely. From having cycling as my only fitness outlet, I now have 3!

^^Triathlete in the making...
Agree with Scherrit. There are many variables to knee pain and often the rider and bike will both need a little tweaking.
