Knee Pain

  • According to a dr friend of mine sending people back home with 'give it two weeks' clears up 80% of all cases.

  • In other news, saw a physio today. My hip is completely stuck, no flex at all, so my knees takes a lot of the stress the hip should take while I run. So is my chest / shoulders, so all the stress that should take, goes down to the hip... who send it on the knees.

Got some stretches to do, and more work next, and more monies in her pocket. She seemed good though, so fingers crossed I'll be allright in a few weeks.

  • Good news is my knees are much, much, better since I started the strengthening programme. Hopefully a trip to bluerip00 when he's back will be the final nail in the coffin for any knee issues.

  • I went to see my GP today and he says I'm pretty much not allowed to do any exercise for at least 4 weeks and that if I even look at a bike I'm dead to him. Shit. He gave me a bunch of stretches to do as well.

partly how i got in to yoga.
strengthening my hips has helped protect the knees.

    wow. such hip.

  • Lotus to open up your hips:

When you can get into lotus without ANY discomfort in your knees, forward bend for a really great hip opener (repeat but reverse with right-over-left for balance).

    Then navasana to strengthen them:

  • Thought this might be of some interest.

My ITB issue (see this thread) is getting better and I managed a 35 mile ride a couple of weeks ago with no real problems.

Then this weekend on I borrowed a Brompton to do the Brompton Urban Challenge and did about 25 miles. Because the Brompton was a weird fit my ITB started playing up by the end of the day BUT when I get back on my properly fitted bike the pain is much better.

I think this is all down to the increased saddle setback.

  • got back on my foam roller the other day. Had almost forgot how beautifully painful it is. Many agony, such relief.

  • Foam rollers are the devil.

  • What does that make this then?

  • Sex toy

  • Things that fit perfectly into other things thread >>>>>>>>

  • Tore the cartilage in my right knee years ago (dancing) and had it fixed. Had similar operation on left knee meniscus last year.

FFS I can now feel more debris in my right knee again.

  • best way to do it

  • I suspect my query is covered somewhere in this thread, but I'm reluctant to trawl through 1,000+ posts.

After the Tour of Wessex just over 2 weeks ago, my right knee became incredibly sore and tender to use. I couldn't even ride home from Paddington to Peckham.
The pain seems to be more on the inside of my knee. After not riding for over a week, it felt fine, with running up stairs being no problem at all. However, a short commute to Covent Garden saw the pain return.
My GP said that there were no problems and that I need time. A physio friend said that soft tissue damage could take 6 weeks to properly heal and that exercises to strengthen the outside of my knee may help.
Am I being impatient with it being only 2 weeks since the injury? Has anyone else had a similar issue? Are there any exercises that people recommend?
I plan to get a bike fit, or at least a cleat fit, to hopefully avoid the issue in the future.

  • See a physio as you want to get this sorted. Inside knee seems not to be cleat.

  • Find a physio who will watch you riding on the trainer. That'll make diagnosis more robust.

  • Fuck sake - I've started running and it's given me a DIFFERENT knee pain, which is similarly debilitating.

Back to the physio when I have time...

  • Started running from scratch, or returning after a break?

  • Not knee pain but I have developed a horrible, sharp stabbing pain right at the back underside of my left heel. It only happens when I bend over or crouch (ie when tying laces), but it is fierce. It is like my heel is being ripped in two.

I have recently changed the handlebars on my fixed gear bike which has had a very negligible change in riding position. Up until now I have been running a bullhorn with a slight drop, and swapped for ergo bars with aero levers. There is no other discomfort to speak of.

Any insight into whether the two could be related would be appreciated.

At a very large guess, it sounds a bit like Plantar Fasciitis.
There are loads of stretches on the web which will help.
You may also want to change your saddle position.

  • Again, not knee pain but this is the only kind of medical advice thread I can find that isn't years old.
I bought recently an older langster as a commuter/beater. It came with a Specialized saddle which at the rear has a raised gel circle on each side, where the sit bones should be.
I find it pretty comfortable apart from a little saddle soreness to begin with.
But now 2 weeks on, I have a lot of pain on my butt, just next to my sit bone and there is a lump, feels like a swollen vein or something.
The gel bits on the saddle are a bit too narrow so may it be putting pressure on the wrong part of my ass?
I really don't have time for the doctor as I work 50 hours a week

    Change your saddle.

  • ^^^
mate just get off to A&E when it's quietest

  • That would be a gratuitous waste of resources.

Most GPs have early morning appointments.

Most people work 50+ hour weeks, I thought.

  • Sorry - that sounds really unsympathetic.

I hope your gooch feels better soon, it's probably nothing more than a haemotoma or localised soft tissue trauma.
