Knee Pain

  • Yep! Although neither is great.

  • Had that one 1 year ago - I was off the bike some weeks while doing physiotherapy sessions with a (cycle)knee specialist - he couldn't do much, but he might shortened the time of inflammation with some ultrasound stuff and massage. 3 weeks after I started slowly back on the bike pushing before discomfort, I might dropped the seatpost 3mm, can't remember.

  • Shiiit! That doesn't sound good. Time to go to a doctor I think! Thanks for the info.

  • Don't bother with a doctor, they will just say take pain killers and rest.

See a sports physio, preferably someone who is specializes in cyclists.

  • ^Sports physio that specializes in cyclists?

  • Yes.

    www.cyclephysio.co.uk

But unfortunately will be overseas for a few weeks.

  • Yes, just found your thread. I'll be in contact when you return if my problems persist. I'll be getting a cleat alignment soon. If that doesn't work then i'm going straight to you!

  • I thought I might as well see a doctor so have an appointment coming up. About 80% of the Leeds fixed gear lot seem to be seeing a physio so if that doesn't go well I'm sure I won't be short of recommendations. Its just annoying because I actually feel relatively fit for the first time in a few months. Is there any form of exercise that won't ruin my knee? Swimming?

  • Cycling is good for your knees apparently...

  • Had an hour with cycling physio Nic Roberts yesterday. Night and day compared to the previous guy I saw whose focus was team sports.

Apparently the cause of my pain (inside of my left knee) is that I drop my left hip and rotate my pelvis on every stroke. She had video footage to prove it!

A shim to try and ease the symptoms, and a load of exercises to strengthen / loosen the hip area. Feeling a lot more positive about it already.

  • knee pain on inside left whenever I 'gun it' for a couple of days. couldn't figure it out but last week I rotated my cleat to allow my knee to point away from the frame more. Fingers crossed, so far so good!

  • Messed my knee up again...

The problem I have is a sharp, sudden pain in my right knee that comes on a few hours after a run. I had it a few weeks ago for the first time, and now it's back again. It cleared up in just a few days by itself last time, so slowly eased back in to my running and all seemed fine, until today.

My knee is a bit sore behind it, between the two big tendons coming down from my thigh. It's a bit stiff, but I can walk almost pain free, until a sudden, sharp pain sets in for a second, then disappear just as quick. Resting helps, and elevation. Pain and stiffness goes completely after just 30 mins or so, but comes back quite soon when I start to walk.

It doesn't feel like it's a cartilage issue, as moving it is pain free. My guess would be that something might be swollen from the run? Any ideas?

Anyone know a good physio now that bluerip00 is away for a few weeks? Preferably in east / north / central london

  • Do you stretch enough? Have you looked into pronation and footwear? It might be worth asking around in the running thread too.

  • omg people go see a professional ffs its your knees, those bendy bits that give youn joy and allow for free movement including cycling
    xx

  • Why would we do that when we can ask strangers on the internet what's wrong with us based on very little information?

  • Will of course see a physio, but no harm in asking here as well is it? Sometimes bluerip00 is here and seems to be able to at least give you some steer to what can be wrong, or someone else had similar issues.

I do stretch. Couple of leg stretches every morning, and a few sun salutations, and before every run, so should be ok.

Need new shoes though, mine has been on their way out for a while but haven't had a chance to go in to a shop for new ones yet. Life and work has been too busy. Was hoping to do so tomorrow, but not sure 5-10 minutes on a treadmill is a good idea...

  • there is a risk of getting the wrong advice/ belief you can self-diagnose. i am sure bluerip00 will say the exact same thing as i did.

i feel your comment highlights my point exactly:
"I do stretch. Couple of leg stretches every morning, and a few sun salutations, and before every run, so should be ok."

you could be over-stretching the problem, over-stretching relative your other, your issue may be strength related not flexibility related etc etc etc.
your yoga form could be all over the place, giving you a false sense of security. doing a variety of exercise is just going to further confuse how things feel for you too.

this comes from a place of love for your knee xxxx

  • Prob strength related, been lazy doing anything but fun exercise, ie running and cycling. Should start doing some proper cross training stuff at least one day a week.

Knee's been fine so far today, just feels a bit odd. I'm still guessing something's swollen in there, but will try and find a physio for tomorrow / this week

  • I went to see my GP today and he says I'm pretty much not allowed to do any exercise for at least 4 weeks and that if I even look at a bike I'm dead to him. Shit. He gave me a bunch of stretches to do as well.

  • That's all your GP has to offer you, I'm afraid. Go and see a physio.

  • partly how i got in to yoga.
strengthening my hips has helped protect the knees.

Sounds like you have a good GP. Mine told me everything seems allright even though my knee hurted, and to stay off the bike for 2 weeks then take some painkillers if it comes back

  • GP's chat absolute bollocks when it comes to stuff they don't know about (Most stuff). Painkillers and rest is the mark 1 answer.

  • To be honest if you're not dying of heart disease, diabetes or cancer and can still walk/talk/do your job they consider you healthy.

Some pain when riding a bike isn't top priority for them, sadly.
