The new World First Formula 3 race car is the first racing car designed and made from sustainable and renewable materials, putting the world first by effectively managing the planet’s resources.
The project truly is a World First.

The car encompasses composite steering wheel derived from carrots and other root vegetables, potato starch wing mirrors, wing end plates made from cellulose and flax composite, lightweight wiring loom incorporating recycled aluminum and plastic, 3D woven natural fiber composites in the barge board, bio diesel race calibrated engine! Impressive stuff even if it is an April Fools joke.

Not only is the car made of plants it can also run on them! The fuel used to run the car made from a mix of chocolate and waste vegetable oil apparently. The car also has a ground breaking oxygen generating catalyst on the radiators that cleans the air as the car moves, a seat made from flax fiber shell, soybean oil foam and recycled polyester, recycled carbon fiber for the engine cover and damper hatch, plant oil based lubricants and recyclable livery and sustainable branding.

The project focuses on the full ‘green’ picture and does not revolve solely around tailpipe emissions. The car itself features cutting‐edge advances in the manufacture of race vehicles.
The WIMRC at the University of Warwick, responsible for this revolutionary project, have focused their energy into bringing sustainable development to the forefront of motor sport design. Project Manager, James Meredith, a researcher in WMG at the University of Warwick said “It’s been very exciting working on the project and important for our team to develop a working example of a truly ‘Green’ motor racing car. The World First project expels the myth that performance needs to be compromised when developing the sustainable motor vehicles of the future.”

The idea behind the World First racing car is to look at ways of producing a car that is ‘truly green’ and can be run as a competitive race car with minimal impact on the environment.

Nico Rosberg snatched fastest time from Lewis Hamilton in the dying moments of Friday morning's first practice session , lapping his Williams in 1m 28.952s compared to the Englishman's 1m 29.263s for McLaren.

Eleven other drivers dipped beneath 1m 30s as yet again the times were incredibly close, led by Toyota's Jarno Trulli who made up for a spun in Turn One by lapping in 1m 29.271s to shade Red Bull's Sebastian Vettel (1m 29.337s), Ferrari's Felipe Massa (1m 29.342s), Williams' Kazuki Nakajima (1m 29.371s), Ferrari's Kimi Raikkonen (1m 29.398s), Renault's Fernando Alonso (1m 29.422s), Brawn's Rubens Barrichello (1m 29.525s), McLaren's Heikki Kovalainen (1m 29.590s), Brawn's Jenson Button (1m 29.747s), Force India's Adrian Sutil (1m 29.864s) and Toyota's Timo Glock (1m 29.934s).

Either McLaren have a new aero package for the fast corners, or they're running light. I still don't think McLaren have sorted that problem, but we'll see in the qualies tomorrow.
