thanks for that
been looking at one of these....ABUS 6500/85 Bordo Granit X-Plus Folding Lock
nice and compact, a good rating onthe Abus website - but any good really? -

Totally the best lock I've ever had, wouldn't deter someone with the right tools, but nothing will.
Just about enough protection for me in a very conveinient package.
Would bang.

The specific answer to your question is in the Secondary Locks thread, where you'll find a link to an extremely disappointing test for that lock. The list is at the beginning, and the link for that lock's test is in the first post.

i don't think people pick locks, they just cut through them

Who gives a fuck, it's cool and it's anodised the same colour as bits of my bike, I want it.
-

couldn't they just make a bumpkey attached to the cylinder if you still have to push the key in as the last action.

Can anyone recommend a decent lock for locking up around bigger objects such as lamp posts? I have a kryptonite fahgettaboudit and mini evo but I struggle to find places to lock the frame and both wheels when going in to town.
thanks

Does anybody have recommendations for which of the locks at the top of the thread can deal with being left outdoors in the weather 24/7?
I have the Asakiltt Shackle Lock and have been leaving it locked to the cycle stand outside my work because it's both heavy and impossible to attach to my frame with the bracket provided.
It's only about a month old but today it took me around twenty minutes to get the key in properly and unlock. I've really lost confidence in it - the feeling that your bike might be attached in that one place forever is not a nice one. I'm fairly sure it hadn't been tampered with but of course I can't be certain.
Reading through the thread the GRP Superdeals U-Lock seems to also have problems with the weather.
I'm happy to pay more but before shelling out it would be good to hear if anyone has experience of exposing their lock to the weather.

Abus Granit X-Plus 54 with Brunox Turbo lubrication.

All locks left outdoors, should be properly and regularly lubed with graphite grease.
That is Abus' own recommendation, and I think they would know best.

Don't bite my head off, I know these 2 locks are two very different sizes, but I'm still going to ask since my knowledge is rather limited on this subject.
Essentially I have been told by my live-in landlord that no bikes are to be kept in the house (didn't know this when signing the contract).
I don't yet have a bike but looking to purchase either a Cinelli Mystic Rat or a custom (obviously) 14 Bike co SS.
The only locking point I have outside the front of the house (in a little 14x4ft compound) in to a large solid steel ventilation pipe (very securely fitted and concreted in).
I've been looking at the Abus Granite 54 and the Kryptonite New York Fahgettaboudit Mini.
Now I know Kryptonite won't fit around the post but could be used as a second lock. But I'm also not sure if the Abus would reach from the post to the frame (bike has to be running away from the wall not flat/parallel due to space), so I'm kinda stumped and looks like I may have to get a chain type lock for at home.
Any of you have any ideas/opinions that may help me in this?
Many thanks in advance,
Ryan

If it's for leaving outside at night, then a 19mm thick chain for (leaving permanently) outside your flat, AND a u-lock for portable use.
Or you could think differently and get a foldable bike, like a Moulton? If it's in a case, and collapsed, it not a bike anymore, it's luggage.

If money isn't a problem, get a custom 14 with SS couplers.
Like a folding bike, only not.

Good call.
A separable bike could be just the ticket.
Freeman did a great looking track bike.

Take it inside anyway.

ryan w - did the landlord know you had a bike before you signed the contract? Seems a bit odd.

Are you sure it's steel? Cast iron is brittle and easily smashed with a good hit.

14 have done a couple of awesome polo bikes with couplers (probably normal bikes too...), skoota had the two parts powdercoated different colours (blue and white)... Looked amazing.
