The lock you listed is a good option, but not idea in London (the £19.99 one), I use that for my singlespeed in Copenhagen, it's still outside Osterport waiting for me to pop round again.
perhaps one should clarified that the lock listed here in this topic are merely for London and other cities that got hit hard by cycle thieves, places where Nowhere Fast live tend to have a very low crime rate to not required such heavy lock.

i also ride in Coventry city now n then, and well that's a city so you know how it is

...actuallyyyyyyyy I'm about to buy a mini evo' shall I bother getting it with the cable?
I do already have a little cable lock that i use to lock the front wheel or saddle though, just to stop ass holes walking off with my shit

Nowhere fast, there is a LOCKS thread that you can post in. It deals with all levels of locks, so might be the better place. Truly, your posts on here are actually very unhelpful, rather than being helpful at all. Please post your ideas on minimized security in that thread, or possibly the other bike security threads. There is one called LET'S TALK LOCKS AND SECURITY, and it may be the perfect place for your ideas. This thread doesn't benefit from being diluted.

was just suggesting a cheap option...
There are already cheap options in the list, that range from £15.00 - £17.00, and those are 16mm-18mm thick. Your options are not as cheap, and also not as secure.

Nowhere Fast you have sinned.
20 lashes with a Kryptoflex Cable. (its all they are good for).

I think GA2G was being pretty clear, you're mis-informing people on this thread, if you wish to have general talk on locks, do like GA2G says on the other threads. If you wish to discuss your experiences of locks outlined in this thread as 'locks that work' then go ahead.
-
• #1237
Ga2g, i understand your intentions and you have put a lot of effort in to the list. But no thread is sacrament, and he was talking about locks.

laner, this thread is not just about "the list". It's an excellent resource for those that are looking for the best in bicycle locking....materials and methods. It hasn't just happened by accident. I have sent polite private messages to several people, to ask them if they would preserve this thread in the serious resource it has become. Every single person has agreed. And that is why this thread has not been derailed.....because everyone saw the merit of it.
I pooled information, and gained exceptional input from forum members here. It's a community resource. It would never have been as good as this without the forum's input. No thread is sacrosant, true, but it can be kept on track, and as a resource, if people believe its worth it. So far, everyone has seen some use in it. I hope you might also.
Also, the reach of this thread has gone far past just the use of forum members. Just look at the linkbacks below. Keeping it on track isn't easy, but quite a few people would like to see it kept this way. In the end, its the forum that decides. It could have been derailed long ago, but wasn't. Oh yes, even Kryptonite read this thread, and have actively taken part on this forum......openly and privately.

Agreed, i see all that this thread and how it is seen by more than just the forum. Wwhich also comes with people coming along asking about certain locks which are poor.
I saw it as a place where people can ask questions, even if they have been asked before (see how nowhere fast changed his mind from the low end kryto to the better choice of a mini evo).
Anyway happy to bow out of this one, not really to do with me.
Many thanks for not loudly pointing out my use of sacrament, when i meant sacrosanct :)

Kryptonite evo is still not on 'the list' though, this highlights GA2G's point I feel!

Tenderloin there are images on this thread of cut open Mini Evo's which make the point better than I can. Let's all be gracious and move on eh?

Ok I really need to discuss this. It is not really question but a 'ridestyle' dilemma. I live in a town where most people are honest. And I mean, REALLY honest. I am Italian and I know how things work...how people don't really care about anything and everyone is ready to stab you in the back as soon as you get the soap from the floor. So yeah, I understand why I should seek security in the lock....but here in switzerland things are really different.
That's why I bought the kryptonite forget about it without second thoughts. I honestly...cannot forget about it...I paid a lot of money for it, than it came and yep...that's VERY big and VERY heavy. I'm not sure I'll ever need one of these in this town....and not for my bike (a stock fuji classic). Bike usually stays inside the house or in the garage. Longest parking times are in the university gardens. Other things: few hours if I go out shopping or I leave it in front of the post office for few minutes. No night long parkings at the station or in the streets.
The forget about it is also not big enough to chain the frame to a pole. I've also bought a kryptonite steel cable (120cm) to do that...but it is another (big) thing to bring whenever I go out and it's really not comfortable.
Nobody (the occasional stealer) goes out in the afternoon with a chainsaw ready to cut people' u-locks so I am pretty sure nobody will be able to picklock or cut a kryptonite evolution (which is already lighter and thinner than the forgetaboutit) while i go shopping for 30 minutes or I stay in university for 4 hours with the bike parked in the garden.
I can understand that if someone leaves a 3000£ bike in the streets every night in the same place, an apocalypse-proof lock should be a must but that's not my case. Should I sell the forget about it and get an evolution or even thinner one?

Its about having the lock that makes your bike the least attractive one to steal.
Just keep the current lock, htfu and get used to carrying it around. I have one of those and a massive motorbike cable lock in my bag at all times (nb cable lock is not an endorsed lock, just used for front wheel to frame locking).

• #1245
rogermorse, you CAN sell your Fagh or maybe swap someone for an ABUS Granit X 54, which is lighter, but still very good. Or combine a new/replacement lock with an alarm lock. Have a look at the first post on the first page of this thread for ideas and to make comparisons.
-
• #1246
ok but i can't even find a proper way to fix it to the frame when riding...i don't want to wear a backpack all the time on every ride...I don't always need a backpack so yes, I would like to stick it to the frame without it sliding everywhere on every turn. i should maybe build a lock holder somehow....and a very strong one because this thing is VERY heavy.
-
• #1247
There are lock holsters available, and I believe there is a thread about them also.
And if you don't like to carry a bag/backpack, what do you keep your puncture repair kit in? Mini-pump, patches, glue, levers, 15mm scanner......
-
• #1248
i usually don't bring ANY of this. And sorry, but a repair kit would fit even in the smallest saddle bag of the world...come on it's not like bringing 2 kilos 20cm size lock, you don't need a backpack for puncture repair kits...i'll think through it and see if I find a better solution.

lock holster built to size of your lock. kryto fagas are surprisingly easy to carry like this. -

GA2G, do you have any views on the Abus Mini 401?
http://www.wiggle.co.uk/abus-u-mini-401-bike-lock/
From what I can gather this is a relatively recent Abus lock (it's not on the Abus website) that features a 16mm shackle in a portable package. The capacity is slightly less than a Evo Mini (83mm) at 75mm but having had a play with it I reckon it will fit around a sheffield stand and through a rear wheel and seat tube of steel frame bikes with fairly tight clearances...as long as they don't have deep section wheels.
It looks like a good choice for primary security if you don't mind being restricted to sheffield stands and you don't have deep section wheels. What do you think?
was just suggesting a cheap option...
or this?
