I'm curious how Abus Granit (or any other of lesser thickness) compares to Kryptonite Fuhg and Mini-D.
I've just had a conversation with Nhatt about it and her mid range Abus is double bolted. What does it mean in real life? My Mini-D is pretty rattly. I can imagine it's going to be very easy to bend the shackle once you cut through. Now, with double locked Abus you'd have to remove a part of shackle to pull it off the bike's frame. Does it mean that the time to cut it with an angle grinder would be twoce as long despite it being thinner?

I think I read somewhere on the internet that it was only 8mm thick. Seems a bit on the thin side if true.
I wouldn't use it as a primary lock, but with either with Mini-D or Mini-Fagh. I need something longer to attach it where the mini D-lock doesn't reach or to secure kiddie trailer.

I´ve read through the entire thread before and I haven´t found such images. But when you tell me they exist I believe you :-)
Now I will use only my Krypto NYL to secure my bike!
Thanks!I found it in the Stolen Bikes thread.

*15th January 2010 #3120 [STOLEN BIKE thread]
y-s stolen cross bike in clapton **My bike was stolen from outside of the office today. It was locked with a kryptonite evo mini lock to a kryptonite anchor. the thief cut the lock through probably with an angle glinder in a very short period in a gated(unlocked) development. *
*
It's a pastel green Raleigh special products cyclocross bike, and had ksyrium sl wheels, schwalbe cross pro tyres, deda zero100 stem, deda newton bars, fizik aliante saddle, campag centaur ergos, veloce mechs, chorus chainset, paul neo retro cantis, and sks mudguards. -

"... the thief cut the lock through probably with an angle glinder in a very short period in a gated(unlocked) development."
Ok, it was an angle grinder and not a bolt cutter ;-)
But I will read the entire thread, maybe I find another picture.
Even a Krypto Mini Fahg won´t last long against an angle grinder. -
• #1106
Trust me, I have seen it cropped, as in, with bolt croppers.
No good as a primary lock if you want to keep your bike.
And the fact it only has a one sided locking system makes it even shitter. I would not use this at all.
I use a Fahg, Evo Series 4 (full size), and a bunch of pitlocks and magnetic BBs, (all at the same time).

^ That looks like it was sawn to me, surely the plastic would have melted/burnt a bit...

[QUOTE=GA2G;2047738]I found it in the Stolen Bikes thread. [QUOTE]
Now I´ve read some of this thread and I´m trying not to become paranoid :-)
Bike theft seems to be a real disgrace in London. Here in Nuremberg it´s not that bad, most bikes are secured with rope locks or armoured cable locks. My Krypto NYL is quite unusual here but my bike was worth 2400€, so I need a decent lock. -

No US city i've been to has such a concern for locks. i've used a 13mm On Guard for my 5000 dollar Waterford for years. no other security at all. this is in a few cities too. Atlanta, Wash DC, Cleveland...
i definitely do lock up in high traffic areas though, as a point of security.

I've tried, believe me.

Is the Abus Granit X-Plus 54 really a lock that works?
I´ve found this in the stolen bikes thread:
"Stolen Moulton GT
This stainless steel and black machine was stolen last week 13/02/2010 from Broadway Market in Hackney. It was reported immediately to the police; notices have been posted elsewhere on the web and printed for shops etc. to display. I have spent hours trawling markets, especially Brick Lane. 'My other bike's fixed' so forgive the presence of gears on this one...
Though probably stripped in large part, components were/are as follows:
Cranks and derailleur: Suntour Superbe Pro
Chainring: Royce 57t
Pedals: TA 'track'
Brakes: Unbranded long dual pivots (black)
Wheels: Moulton 20-spoke 369mm with Hugi Compact hubs
Headset: Mavic
Saddle: Green Brooks Professional, matching handlebar tape
Pitlocks on both wheels and seatpost(!)**It was secured with an Abus Granit X Plus U-lock to a proper bike post, around the middle of the frame. The U part had been sawn through in two places very cleanly. **Obviously the thieves came prepared - almost certainly local I'd guess. Though out of visual contact I was very nearby yet heard no loud noises - any ideas?
It is unusual and ought to stand out, in a sense this is its only hope. Doubtless, I'd be appallingly grateful for any help or info. I offer full reimbursement and more on any cost incurred in recovery!! Call 07917 565501. Thanks for reading..."

No locks are unbreakable wapiti. They just buy you a bit more time.

• #1113
I've got the Hiplok. It's a lock and it works.
Happy with it. It's going to be a secondary to the Fagh. -

it is.
the bike however, is very desirable, which is why the thieves spend more effort on it.

• #1115
It has worked for me. Mine bears the scars of an attempted theft.
They bent the bike around the lock and bike stand, buckling the rear wheel in the process.

Which is the best Onguard brute u-lock to get from amazon as a primary lock? Is the one with the 5* rating as good as the Halfords one?

There is no such thing as a 'Mini Fahgettaboudit'. There's the Fahgettaboudit, and there's the New York 3000.
Case solved.
I get my Fahg round frame, rear deep v & bike stand no probs. Obv not gonn work round a lampost though.
On another note, I've seen those hiploks, seems a bit pricey for an 8mm chain. What are the links like? Do they lay flat on your body? That would be good. Otherwise, spine fail in accident.
It also looks fucking huge to fit through spokes I just noticed. Nice idea, not convinced by the execution.

Good point well made.

I can do this also, however I want to know if it will go round a PX carbon track and anything else to secure it. EEI owns one and that is why i asked the question. Were you talking about the same bike?

For fucking fuck sake, I am quite tired at the moment and the title, for some reason, I though said
"Lusts that work".
Fucking hell.

Nothing untoward has happened to my bikes.......touches wood.

I usually lock everything with a Scoble method - seat tube and one crank. If the railing is too fat or of awkward shape, I'd still lock the rear wheel to the seat tube and crank, the frame to the railing with something longer (chain or another D-lock - if I had mini one, I'd use it around the crank and the Fagh to attach the frame to the railing), and the fron wheel to the downtube with a cheap alarmed d-lock.
With the chain, I will probably go for the front wheel and through the frame to the railing.
UPDATE! With Planet X - both mini locks (Fagh and Evo) will go around the down tube with no problem. There's not much, apart from a chain, which would go around combined seat tube and a deep rim (like I said, if I had a bag on me, I'd use mini Evo one to secure the crank with the seat tube, but not to lock onto something). I will post photos later.

Right,
That mini Fagh was a bit of a squeeze, but it's possible to lock it with due care.
The rear wheel is Velocity B43, so perhaps something shallower will give more room.http://oi54.tinypic.com/2iuytkx.jpg
http://oi54.tinypic.com/smyblz.jpgFront wheel (HED3) is locked to the frame and the gates with Hiplok. You will get better results if there's enough room to push the frame against the railing.

Mini Evo doesn't reach around the crank, seat tube and the 43mm wheel with 28mm tyre on.
It's possible to lock the wheel to the seat tube, though.http://oi54.tinypic.com/2v9drud.jpg
http://oi56.tinypic.com/2q3n85l.jpgKrypto Mini Evo doesn't have enough reach to lock the trispoke to the downtube.
Neither does Mini Fagh.http://oi54.tinypic.com/104nc5h.jpg

^ better yet, use both of them, much more secure.
