I think I acknowledged that my question was slightly opposed to the way this thread normally runs.
Locks are a compromise between security and utility.
What utility do you want, and what level of security are you prepared to give up.
This is the prefect thread for the question, as this is where all the experts hang out.
Tiswas is thinking on the right lines.
I want maximum utility - ie exceptionally small, exceptionally light, fairly long and flexible. In terms of security I only need something to stop someone picking up one or more unlocked bike(s) from outside a country pub (or similar) in case me and my friends aren't concentrating.
Basically a road bike equivalent of the old town bike wheel locks.
Maybe I should have posted the question in any question answered, but this seemed to make sense.

What's wrong with an alarmed padlock?
-
• #1079
Sorry I didn't see that. Thanks.
I 've got a disc alarm lock and it's just not that practical (altho it's great on my motorbike), plus mine weighs a ton.
I might think about using that in conjunction with the wire lock. Say attaching it to the outside bike.
Cheers.

Yeah gotcha, but this is London
No it isn't. This is Manchester.
London is down there somewhere ➷ -

nice attempt with the arrow work but I'm in london and that arrow is quite clearly pointing at kent.

it's pretty small though, and can fit in a small saddlebag (if you don't, how are you going to carry puncture repair kit, spare money and the like?);

With these alarm padlocks, how much movement is required to set it off? Also, how loud and for how long do they go off, do they stop after a while?

Well if we're being fussy about it, it points at a half finished cup of tea and my well thumbed copy of Foots 'Vices and Virtues'.
I wonder though, maybe it's something that Velocio knows, what percentage of regular posters are actually London based now-a-days?

Lots of devilscript there, HB

I think they have pretty limited use - I always have to nudge other bikes a bit when I lock up near the office in the morning.

I was thinking along the lines of locking several bikes in my garage together with an alarmed padlock to scare off someone breaking in.

• #1089
That works I guess, although what you really want is for it to have a built in phone and to call you :)

Hi,
first I introduce myself: I´m wapiti from Germany and I´m interested in U-locks. Therefore I´m posting in this great thread. I also apologize for my English, I haven´t written in English for years :-)
Now my question: Is the Krypto Evo Mini bolt crop resistent? I own this lock and the Krypto NYL and I was wondering if the Mini is secure enough.
Thanks, wapiti.

Hiplock. A lock that works or not yet?
Anyone got it? -

Hi wapiti. Please read the first page of this thread. Your answers are there, but you may not agree with them.

Anyone got it?I think I read somewhere on the internet that it was only 8mm thick. Seems a bit on the thin side if true.

Has the Fahg Mini just been SoldSecure Gold certified (finally)?

I´ve read the first page and if I understood it you say that only 16 mm U-locks (or thicker) are bolt crop resistant, exception is the Abus Granit X-Plus 54. Am I right?
-
• #1096
You are correct. The Krypto Mini is secure, but not recommended as equivalent to the locks that are actually in the list. The ABUS Granit X 54 is a special case, as its 13mm side measurement gives diameter through its bar of closer to 15mm. A round bar will be 13mm throughout.
Everybody wants a lighter, smaller lock that is as strong as the bigger, heavier ones. Physics wins I'm afraid.

How do you know that the Krypto Mini is not resistent against big bolt cutters? Have you tested it yourself or do you know a test, e.g. from a bike magazine?

• #1098
^ I saw a video of it being cropped online, quite easily too. Can't find the link, but that's why I got a Fahgettaboudit.

If wapiti can be bothered to trawl through this entire thread, he will find images posted by others of the Krytpo Mini comprehensively defeated - ie. cut.

I´ve read through the entire thread before and I haven´t found such images. But when you tell me they exist I believe you :-)
Now I will use only my Krypto NYL to secure my bike!
Thanks!
Yeah gotcha, but this is London. I honestly think that having anything less than you need is utter stupidity. No lock is bombproof and if someone REALLY wants your bike they'll get it one way or another (even if they have to wait for you to unlock it), so really it's about creating enough deterrent - and a couple of Krypto D locks are pretty good for that.
I either carry two heavy locks or nothing. If I don't have one at all then I don't end up making stupid decisions - having a cheap/weak lock is worse than having none. I would definitely never lock my road bike up anywhere, with anything - it's either with me or I don't go.
