"Oh Shit" moments...

  • Was riding fast downhill while the ground was a bit moist and as I was going into a hard corner, felt the bike lose a bit of traction (was going a bit too fast and cornering too hard), had a tiny wobble, regained control but was too late and ended up kissing a lampost/railings on that corner -- face first. People that seen me mash my face called an ambulance and the day ended with me having a nasty cut (11 stitches) between my eye and eyebrow, massive black eye + swelling, sore jaw and surprisingly, very little damage to bike (instant puncture and the lip of the rim is slightly bent at 2 parts). All in all, a shit experience but certainly made me appreciate and respect ambulance service a lot more and when I can finally see from my right eye and I get back on the road, I certainly won't be pulling hard corners like that anymore.

Heal quick, hope those dint haven't weakened your rim.

To paraphrase the (sods)law of cornering you get more and more confident then skid out and start all over again!

  • Thanks for the kind words.

Completely agree with you. Spun out in a similar fashion (it was pouring down however) about 7 or 8 months ago and while the injuries were minor (scraped knees etc), brought down the confidence of riding in the wet for a while.

  • So have you learned that you need to adjust your riding in the wet?

There is a difference between regaining your confidence and just returning to your prior riding style.

  • Of course I have.

I assumed that I knew how to ride in the wet (and I still do but I feel that being cautious in certain situations might be worth it) but once you have a proper injury, you learn more and if you are ever in similar conditions, you will remember that lesson.

  • Falls off in the wet, really learns the lesson so falls off in the wet again.

  • Hence the 'proper' injury part. A few scrapes have never put me off but stitches is a different story.

  • I hope the rest of your education was not this painful.

  • What a beautiful horse you have.

  • Lovely long legs too

Could be worse - 20 years ago I crashed into some railings with pointy spikey tops and ended up impaling my face on them. 14 stitches, and still an impressive crescent-shaped scar on my right jawline.

  • I think I might unwatch this thread now.

    God, that sounds shit.

  • It wasn't fun, but again it could have been worse. A couple of inches either higher or lower and it would have been game over.

A courier friend of mine always says, it's good to crash once in a while as it certainly isn't fun, you learn and it makes you stronger. I can't say that I entirely agree but there you go. I reckon I got fairly lucky as well, could've been my head instead of my face and a few stitches is certainly better than a fractured skull!

    Meh.

When I was little I* was swinging on the school gate, slipped and a spike went in under my jaw and pierced right up through to the roof of my mouth.

    • - Not actually me, a boy called Duncan Johnson, but still CSB.

  • Riding up Ditchling Beacon , Brighton , overtaken by a learner driver on a blind bend . It nearly hit a Land Rover coming down , swerved in , right onto the nearside kerb , almost onto the bank . There was an instructor in the passenger seat . Landy driver did well . I didn't , I was on the 21t . Bit jaded after a lot of riding on my week off . Well , that's my excuse anyway .

  • front wheel stopped instead of slowing down. huge faceplant. collar bone needed assembling and plating. cheek fracture needed time.
out of the sling after 6 days, fuck 6b weeks! target is back on bike in 12, yoga in 20.
