When people buy cars (expensive or not doesn't matter) as a part-personality replacement/supplement, it's both cause and has a further effect. Arguably, the bigger/more expensive the car, the greater the underlying problem.
the same is true of anything,
spending a lot on a car is only the same as spending a lot on a bike. Some people like to own nice cars, some people like to own nice bikes. Are the people here with expensive NJS builds, or nice titanium frames - compensating for their lack of personality and their underlying psychological problems?!...
not necessarily.

People who buy NJS frames are. People who buy ti frames might be.

The idea that cycling equals poverty and car equals prosperity is one of the main underlying reasons for mass motorisation. It is, of course, entirely false and has contributed to social problems more than many other ideas.
it's riding a bike and not driving a car which is stopping me from being poor
cars are for mugs, you are a double mug if you live in a city and drive

The distinction I was implying was between people buying cars as a part-personality replacement and people who buy cars because they like cars. I wasn't suggesting that there is generally a problem to be diagnosed when people buy cars. That would be nonsense.

kind of.
You don't need to be the richest person in the world to buy a top of the range custom build bicycle, hell if you save up carefully for says, a year, you'd be able to afford a custom titanium frame.
You do need to be rich enough to buy a top of the range rare supercar, and able to afford the running cost of one.
that's what I like about bicycle, a decent bike with quality component (for instance, a Phil Wood groupset) is still a lots cheaper than the cheapest supermini, althought your point still stand by people needing to buy material to fill in the void in their life.

Not sure, where does one buy the mythical Phil Wood Groupset? Heard they are as rare as hipsters with good taste.

Incidentally James, the Phil Wood belt drive system would be considered as a groupset.
if you've replied to that comment last year, you'd be probably right as there wasn't a Phil Wood beltdrive system.

What on Earth made you think* "right I'll wait 375 days before I quote Ed's comment and make a snappy comeback"* and decided upon it?

I had not seen the end of the debate, so had not seen the comment.
Thread dredged by CYOA
Or perhaps it took me 375 days to wrack my brains
Which do you think?
