  • It takes a battery. How you could argue that it is not mechanical in operation is beyond me though.

The jewels provide bearing surfaces just like in a manual-wind watch.

a mechanical watch is powered by a thigthened spring and the regulated unwinding of that spring moves the hands to tell the time.
a quartz watch is battery powered and regulated by the quartz crystal with it's precise vibrations. these vibrations are conducted through a computer to a motor to provide movement of the hands.

    two different things

  • Am I just too thick here?

  • Yes, but I'm using the term "mechanical" in its general meaning. Hence why I said, it's still mechanical, just because it's quartz. My bike is mechanical, but it's not a wind up watch either.

Watches with metal hands which spin around are mechanical. The mechanisms use jewels as bearing faces.

  • ah, I see. mechanical hes a very specific meaning when it comes to watches.
what you mean by mechanical is 'analog'.

I get that the jewels are bearing surfaces. I just don't know what spinning parts there is in a quartz movement. I guess it's because of the chronograph complication and the functions beeing linked together somehow.

  • Yeah, I guess the large number is due to the chrono, but I know very little about quartz driven movements.

And no, I don't mean analogue! Being analogue has not much to do with requiring jewels for bearing edges. A sun dial is an analogue clock.

  • one day!

  • Nobody told me metal watch straps were an instrument to pluck out arm hairs! Ouch!

Yeah I've been wearing watches with metal straps since I was about 13. I've now got a constant bald patch on my wrist.

  • ^look like cheap plastic

  • That looks exactly like those matte black cars. i.e. shit.

  • This may not be quite the point of this thread, but worth a go...

Anyone know of anywhere in Stoke Newington / N16 area where I can take my watch to be fixed? Just needs a new pin inserting (the little ones that hold a rubber strap to the watch face) and probably a new battery.

    Ta

  • That black sea dweller is amazing. You people know nothing.

  • I think it's gorgeous... But... That ^ inscription is a bit odd, looks like Mario Vaz applied it with Tippex......
    #streetgoth

  • It does look wank.

  • the black would look shite after a week of general use!

  • Why? Those DLC coatings are very hardy.

I seriously hope you're trolling. It looks shit

  • I'm with Señor Bear on this.
It's far nicer in black than any of the blingy shit that Rolex themselves will sell you. Would be nicer if it was satin, I'll grant you.

But twenty five thousand smackers? fuck off!

  • nice starp!

  • the black would look shite after a week of general use!

I've worn my PVD Christopher Ward pretty much everyday since I got it about 2.5 years ago and it still looks great...

  • one day!

Is there's a reason why the screw is on the left? right handed people?

  • I guess since the crown is not needed that often to wind the watch it is safe to move it to the left side so it doesn't dig into the skin of your hand.

  • Its actually so that when you flex your wrist it doesnt jab it as the crown is fricken huge

edit: ^ he said it first
