  • Not been on here in ages but hoping the hive mind can help. Down in London celebrating my 40th and my wife has bought me a Steinhart which I'd like to wear asap but the bracelet is looooong and I don't have any tools with me. We're staying in Kensington but will be around central later. Any reccos on where would be best to take it without having to loose an eye or kidney?

  • he is not open until Monday if that is not too late, but you could try the Watch Repair Man in the circle of shops under Piccadilly Circus tube. he is a good bloke. Avoid lunchtimes.

  • Thanks for the tip. Was hoping for somewhere today though as we leave on Monday

  • In case anyone here is interested in a bit of English watchmaking history, I’m selling this 1963 Smiths Everest A404/E. just serviced with new crystal, in beautiful condition. Asking £850. let me know if you’re interested. More photos and info obviously available.

These watches were made in very small numbers to celebrate the 10th anniversary of the ascent of Everest, during which Hilary wore a Smiths A404.

  • Yes please, DM incoming

  • On a Steinhart note, got this earlier in the week, 3 days into my ownership the lumed 22 on bezel has gone awol. Only 7 months into warranty and have original receipt so hopefully Steinhart will fix.

  • Nice looking Steinhart though

  • I want to like this watch.
A lot of the time I find the logos and lettering on men's watches rather garish. Timex may be the best out there, by just typing out their name in a plain no bullshit font. It's perfectly circular with lugs sticking out at an (almost) right angle. And I'm no snob, if a cheap watch would do the job then all the better.
But then there's the shiny finish that would look more at home on a bathroom fixture, and the 13mm thickness that kind of defeats the purpose of the otherwise rather dressy look. To Timex' credit the website also shows a sideways photo to demonstrate the thickness. Presumably to lessen the rate of returns?

The search for a dress watch below 1K continues.

  • ^ it's like an offering of halfs on a pill that's been found on the floor of a rave ,

  • 40mm will look like a dinner plate as well

  • Get a Max Bill or a second hand Nomos with California dial

  • Great looking watch, hopefully Steinhart get it sorted under warranty.

I got the non-GMT 42mm so will keep an eye on the bezel lume

  • Some variant of a max bill? Very unfussy , slim, 34 and 38mm versions. Almost right angle lugs. Sapphire version if the plexiglass isn't your thing

2nd had Nomos (tangente, Orion etc), or Stowa Antea ?

Or an older grand Seiko 9F quartz, like some of the early sbgx or sbgs models. Dressy, well finished, some only 6mm thick. 400-600 on eBay / chrono24 etc.

  • Today a funny day, don’t know why it took a while but I’ve realised that those in labour jobs tend to have smaller watches, but those in office jobs have gigantic watches.

After using a 34mm, I wanted a smaller digital one that’ll look smart, Casio tried and tested one is super comfortable, the bracelet is much more comfortable than the Tudor BB58 I used to have.

  • @chrismanc you explained it better

  • I certainly hope so, I had it on for an hour last night and the flaky lume seems to be contagious.

  • I'm looking to get a watch to mark my 30th birthday and I've been looking at the Omega SM 300m 2254. I've found this one. Any advice? Is this a good price?https://www.chrono24.co.uk/omega/seamaster-300m-41-22545000-c-2010--id32882713.htm

Both great suggestions thanks. Between the Nomos Tangente and Orion models I would presume the Tangente is called that because of its right angle lugs? Which is what I have told myself I need on my next watch. But then the Orions just look a hell of a lot more attractive at first glance. What does the forum say to my vexation between right angled vs slanted lugs?

That's lovely! But IMO the robust casing looks a bit too similar to that forum approved titanium Citizen that I've already got, so couldn't quite justify owning one.

  • I see what you mean on casing v that Timex, yeah.

  • I'm not particularly informed but I got the same in blue with box and papers for quite a bit less
