hmmmm... tell me more about Constellations:

Careful with the Constellations - check on the movements. I bought a lovely 68 Constellation on the Bay and took it to Omega for servicing. Omega said "LOL Wut?" as the movement (1002 I think) was unservicable. Been looking for a working movement on the Bay for a while. Nothing after 3 years. Massive sad face.

Was given this recently, it was my Grandfathers, possibly bought in the 60s.
Does anybody know anything about it? Ive had a google, but cant seem to find out very much relating to this specific model/typeI know very little about Certina, but they seem a decent make and well finished. There is a blog on the service of a non auto Certina here

Here's my pie-pan Connie from 1964 with the sought after dog-leg lugs. I picked it up on fleabay for just over 200 quid. Got it serviced and regulated for 140 quid. Got the tiny half baton by the date window replaced with an original for 70 quid and then splashed out on an original new old stock Omega 'grains of rice' bracelet for this model for just over 100 notes. Total cost was just over 500 quid and in the condition mine is in I see them regularly go for £800 plus on the bay. This was a labour of love though. Pic taken before half baton was replaced:

2nd hand Omegas
Where to find well kept ones in London? I've just received some money from a relative and whilst most of it will be going towards my new flat, I can probably spare around £750-£1,000 for a nice 60s Seamaster..
I have had, and still own a few.
Do not buy one that has been to India!

There are a few countries inclusing India, where there are quite a few of these watches available, and often they have suffered from poor servicing. I had one once, and my watchmaker told me to not bother with it (it was intermittent) as the parts inside were frankensteined from other watches, and gears had been reversed in order to make worn parts "work" again.Avoid re-dials. Yes, that black dial looks sweet, and that mad orange dial looks groovy, but most often these re-dials have been done in the Far East and are shite. Inaccurate, poorly implemented, and ultimately devaluing the watch.
eBay should get you a decent Seamaster for somewhere very roughly in the £250 region. You could budget for a service/clean, and then not have to worry so much about the condition of the watch.
If you find a model you like, research it. What was the original crown fitted like? The case back? What movement does it use? Does the photo of the movement show equal amounts of corrosion on the different parts? Do the serial numbers tie up correctly with the estimated date of the watch? Any mis-matched serial numbers?
I don't think there are too many vultures here, so you could post anything of interest here for others to comment on.

I find it hard to trust eBay sellers of watches. I'd also be much happier seeing the watch in person before parting with my money.
Having said that, i am a little bit in love with this:
The new crystal looks a little out of place though... i always thought the original ones were tapered and not stepped at the sides?
Crystal looks fine to me, just the way it's been photographed and how it's caught the light.
It's a very nice example and the guy's selling from the UK, plus has excellent feedback, so you can't really go far wrong.
Because it's mechanical but not an automatic and very clean plus serviced I reckon it will sell for about 350 to 400 quid tops but we'll see.
If you were to go to any number of watch shops in London and buy over the counter you'd pay 600 to 800 for this. Up to you fella, your notes.

Rep to both of you for the good advice.
I've been around eBay long enough to spot a dodgy seller but definitely need to do a bit more research on each watch i'm looking at to spot the parts that have been replaced etc.
Will keep you posted.

mirius, how's your roamer devotion/collection going at present, any new additions?
It's been going through phases and at the moment I'm deep in investigating the early cylinder movements. I have a lot of new watches, but I'm not sure that most of them would be of any interest to anyone here. I'm excited for example that I've now have (or will have when it arrives) proof that a suspected calibre is indeed a previously unknown one.
I had thought 1919 was when the switch from pin set to crown set happened, but this recent purchase shows that it was 1920, at least on the Cal 59's.
Flickr proved to be too much hard work, so I was also forced to do a rough and ready site to easily compare the calibres. One day I might look into what would be necessary to allow the spiders to explore it so that it actually appears in search results.
On a non Meyer & Studeli note, I did splash out rather too much money on this recently which might be of interest to some. It's just going off today for a service and investigation to see if it can be put back into running order. For me it's a nice union of two collecting interests - pre 1930 watches and bumpers

Well that's not going to work, you need to put holes in the strap.
