  • Only because we’ve been through it a bunch of times before.

IIRC - a new Rolex is too expensive because of the supply issues, Grand Seiko leaves you cold, and none of the other options suggested are your thing (Hermes, Bell & Ross, Farer, etc etc).

  • I was hoping for something that would shed some light on one of them - something similar to the story behind the Tintin Speedmaster, which to me makes up a large part of what makes it special, rather than marketing copy that points out the wonders of sapphire crystal and how amazing 100 metres of water resistance is.

Something that shows that the watch in question has a little bit of soul to it, and that the story has in some way had an impact on the person telling it.

  • £275 posted for this if anyone keen. Full box, papers. Still under warranty as it’s only few weeks old.
    Sold

  • something similar to the story behind the Tintin Speedmaster

    It's all marketing bullshit. *

What makes it special to you is what makes it special to you.

    Rolex gmt history...

*EDIT: May come across to hard. I think high end watches in general are built on marketing bullshit. It's manual / autos in a quartz world

  • @Dammit, have you asked for the legal letter for the tintin?

  • My desire for an auto GMT has ebbed-away since I don’t travel with work any longer.. I have a quartz Braun GMT which is understated and looks fine in work or casual attire.. if it’s ticking I know the time is right(ish) and I don’t worry too much about damage, loss if I ever get to travel again.

I think the utility of a GMT is the main draw.. if I were into aviation then a ‘true’ triple-timezone GMT might stir my loins more.

Now if Casio did a dual-time analogue with local radio connection (so your primary dial set automatically as you stepped off the plane but your home dial stayed with GMT).. that would be something I might be interested in.

  • Still under warranty as it’s only few weeks old.

You kept this one quite a long time, must have been special (:

  • GMT: I still like my GS. Go look at them in a store if you haven't / can.

I don't remember if you mentioned it before, it would be good to know if you insist on a flyer or could do with a caller as that would broaden options a fair bit.

  • Wasn’t the Tintin just a marketing exercise that went wrong?

Not sure if any GMTs are particularly storied in the way certain divers and chronos are. Pan Am pilots didn’t get up to the same sort of adventures I guess.

You could pop the bezel off a Rolex like Marlon Brando?

  • My desire for an auto GMT has ebbed-away since I don’t travel with work any longer..

My best friend is in the B.C. so it’s nice to know what time it is for her on the other side of the Atlantic

  • Yes haha, another special coming though.

  • Wasn’t the Tintin just a marketing exercise that went wrong?

Hergé's family revoked their permission for the project at the 11th hour, after Omega had painted the first run of dials.

Omega then released the watch as a series Speedmaster Racing to use up the dials, despite it being a "proper" Moonwatch with the hesalite crystal, text on the back of the case etc.

So it wasn't what it was sold as, and conjecture is that the actual number produced was below the numbers for a limited edition as they only had what they'd painted, less some for service dial stock for the production run.

To me that makes this model interesting, it's a model with its own story, that's not what it was sold as, in a family of watches that have the whole Apollo program story as their background.

  • It’s crazy how they went up in price in the last few years. People struggled to sell them, they were readily available until they weren’t. Almost as crazy as the “Kermit”...

  • Chrono24 tells me that mine is worth 10k, with the spread being 8-12, how true that is I don't know and don't intend on finding out. I alternate the Tintin with the Sub at the moment, with the Railmaster making it out of the box every now and again.

  • Pay over the dollah and be done with it. Everyone will think youre wonderful.

  • All this talk of GMTs reminded me how much I've always wanted an original 1967/68 one of these:

  • @Dammit I don't know what constitutes a proper GMT, but I quite like Sinn instrument chronos... This one caught my eye for something slightly less "pure instrument"
Given your love of tinkering with engineering I would think Sinn to be a fitting choice.

  • Ha, my next suggestions were jlc.

  • Mind you, my favourite jlc is the geophysic true second. One day...

  • Great minds - the Geophysic is my fave as well, although I suspect it is a special type of person that wants an automatic that ticks.

@dammit - what about a JLC Hometime if you want something a bit different from the others in your collection (although I guess it wouldn't be new).

  • VC overseas dualtime?
