I'd rather just buy a brand new watch for my 'notable birth year'.
-
• #18678
That's the other option of course, and would likely work out cheaper (1976 Freccione vs. 2016 39mm Explorer 1, for e.g.)
I'd still prefer the old watch, however.

There's a shop in Burlington Arcade that has Rolex in the window labelled by date.
The Vintage Watch Company and you can pick your date online. It's not a recommendation.
Just tried 1976 on their website and they claim it's one of the most difficult years for vintage Rolex, they've only ever had a couple of them.

I know mil watches aren't everyone's cup of tea, but there was only one watch issued by the RAF in 1976 known as the "Lost Navigator". Nobody knows which supplier made it, and only around 2000 were issued.

This is probably the most overpriced store in Western civilisation.
It took me 3 years, but I found one on eBay in San Francisco. I chose the FedEx option, got it checked out by a man and kept it because everything stacked up.
Patience is a wonderful thing.

That is interesting, best place to find one would be eBay, somewhere else?

I put my year of birth (1987) in the Vintage Watch Company and was shown ten of the ugliest watches I've laid eyes on.
-
• #18685
Not surprising really, you were born in 1987 :-)

I just want a normal basic Speedy Pro, recent, for significantly less than new ones go for, on 0% interest finance

Chrono 24 has a date search filter. You could try that, then look for ones with a UK bricks and motar shop. It will also give you an idea of the watches from that period you may not have thought about.

Maybe. I'd have thought 21 would be the biggest, and would expect parents to be paying.
Time to start buying all the 1996/7 submariners.
-
• #18689
Really, a vintage sub for your 21st. I would think the kind of people who are buying £4k+ watches for their kids 21st are going to buy a new one. They are quite easy to lose/damage/have stolen and insurance is expensive, don't think I'd give one to a 21yr old anyway.
-
• #18690
Yep, I wouldn't buy one there. I was given a new one which I chose in Geneva. Nice place to go watch shopping.

I know of 1 person who got a Rolex for their 21 and it was a new one because he wouldn't appreciate one of his birth year.

A photographer mate of mine bought his son a Daytona for his 18th... Crazy bastard...
He did have the De Beers account tho', he did OK for himself... Armed guards used to shut his street in Fulham off when the armoured truck arrived with all the loot to be photographed...
