  • Nah, the case of that GS is all about heritage, it references the first GS 6145 8000 autos dating back from the 1960s. The same ones that took the Swiss on and beat them at their own game.

In 1968, 1969 and 1970 Seiko had 226 wristwatches with its 4520 and 4580 calibers certified as observatory chronometers. In both cases these observatory chronometers were then sold to the public for normal use, some examples are still floating around but very rare.

My 6145, 4520 and 4522 are ridiculously accurate for watches over 40 years old. Actually scratch that - they're ridiculously accurate in comparison to watches sold today.

  • omg

the Tudor Titanium is actually 42mm.

  • It's called a Pelagos CB and yes it is. It's also surprisingly light to wear, pleasantly so in fact for a large watch.

  • cheers VU

i did know that ;-) It was a google copy and paste that brought up the size so it was a lazy copy and paste and then paste....

  • ^ Very nice...

  • The Explorer has arrived. It wears bigger than expected for a 36mm case (I have a 7.5 inch wrist so not skinny) and somehow manages to combine being really understated while oozing quality. Am very chuffed with it, have a look:

  • Quite a high bezel/glass combo....noice doe. Now for Everest ay?

  • whack a leather strap on :)

  • Lovely.

How is the bracelet / clasp quality? Apparently it was a bit flimsy on the 114s...

I must admit i've been having a bit of a nose around for a 114 in the last couple of days.

  • Nice one, Joel... Doesn't get me all sticky like the old models do ^^ but very nice all the same...

  • @tilover

Been having a gander at leather straps, in particular leather nato/zulus, any recommendations? I'm kind of keen on a Horween leather strap. The best I've seen are the following, would be nice to order from the UK though...
    Worn & Wound
    Daluca
    Throne
    Gas Gas Bones (UK)

  • Murtz starp or gtfo.

  • Ta :) it's a flip-lock with the Oyster link pattern continuing over the clasp and the crown embossed in the centre. It would be practically impossible to accidentally open it, unlike the older Oysters on the 14270. It could potentially be a bit flimsy if you beat it repeatedly with a big hammer. Apart from that all good ;)

  • I think the trouble with those Grand Seikos is that the Seiko writing at the top seems a bit superfluous, it already says Grand Seiko and GS so it's all a bit of an overkill.

Do they do any models without as much writing?

  • hmmm...

I've put in a purchase request on Chrono24 for a 114270. Shit just got real.

  • YKIMS - honestly these will be worth more as an investment in years to come than the new model because they're the last run of the 36mm case, which was fundamental to the original 1953 Explorer design.

What sort of dollar are you looking at, new or second-hand (if you don't mind me asking, natch)?

  • 2010 boxed and papers, mint; ~£3k

  • Sounds good! Let us know how you get on.

  • i have a bas & Loakes which is brill but from the US
big in London is Toshi https://toshi-straps.co.uk/testimonials/

and the strapsmith in the all in the US again

    and off course Murtz

or eBay just search for horween or buffalo but a lot of them are 20/22 panerai sizing

  • leatherstrapon.gif

  • Wicked, thanks. Strapsmith and Bas and Lokes look great.
