Wouldn't buy speedplays, have a look here:-

prefer Campag profit myself, but that is because it is what I have had for years. Keos are hard to fault, according to my matesVery interesting link that. Cheers. I am inclined to follow them and shun speedplay. I might think differently if they were far and away the better pedal or I was used to using them but this doesn't seem to be the case and I have'nt used them once. It reminds me a lot of the problems around 2000 and soon after with the DMCA. Music, film, printer technology and so many companies desperately trying to keep their customers locked into their products and keep them away from the inner workings. Buying something does not equate to ownership. I stopped following all the legal issued with that so I don't know how things are now.
i have the speedplay zero track and they are the best pedal IMO easy to clip in, hard to pull out of and you can adjust them however you like
also keo cleats can wear out pretty easily as there plastic, speedplay cleats will last you over a season sometimes more
That's really a road use issue, as long as you keep your feet on the pedals they are fine. What kills them quickly is pushing off with your foot every time you stop at a junction.
For day-to-day commute/out and about riding I can stick with mtb pedals and shoes. I don't put my foot down at the lights that much anyway I just look like a twat track standing so if I was out in the road shoes I can do that at lights.
I don't think I need as much float as Time ATAC gives me and find it a bit annoying that my foot can move around so much. My pedalling action is quite straight so would would keo be better for this?

Keo has a choice of float determined by the cleat, black for zero, grey for 4.5° and red for 9°. I use the red ones for road and longer TTs, and the black ones for 10s and the track, with the release tension turned right up on my track bike. The float on Keos has a bit of friction to it, unlike the completely free float of some other systems, so they never really feel like you're skating around on the pedal even with the red cleats.

That sounds perfect. I've just been googling around and chose Keo before I read this. Time ATAC does feel too slipery. I'll give black and grey a go I think

For what its worth, it kind of depends on what you are planning to do on the track.
Standard Keo's are not up to the job for powerfull sprinters without straps. The carbon blade ones are OK but prone to breaking with really powerful guys. SPD-SL is a better choice if you plan on doing power events, Keo's are fine if you are only doing mass start. Speedplay are great, but the lack of shoe compatibility is an issue. Avoid Time RXS, they don't hold well enough.
To say one or the other is more prolific at the track at club level is quite misleading, and doesn't really suggest what is best for you. The 'most common' is definitely not 'the best'.
Very general rule of thumb. Mass start riders are happy to use whatever they use on the road. Power event riders generally use specific stuff.

Much more powerful then the OP, I fancy, and you can always add straps later without having to change your pedal/cleat settings again
These are CHF599 (about £400!) ready converted from http://www.ugd.ch/index.php?s=14&ss=3&artikelID=327. The strap adaptor on its own is £200

I use Look Delta's at the track. I like them because you can really crank the tension up much higher than the Look Keo's i have on my roadbike.
Haven't had an accidental unclip with them as yet.
I rode Time Atacs briefly for a while... unclipped with them regularly. -

Mmm... £200 for a small lump of machined alloy... I suppose if it's painted red...
How about these: http://www.velodromeshop.org.uk/index.php?p=product&id=812

I use Look Delta's at the track.
I've seen a Look Delta hack where the tension adjuster was replaced with a stud and wing nut arrangement, so that there was no release spring at all. Clip in, tighten the wing nut, feet attached to the pedals until your mechanic catches you and undoes the wing nuts.

I run a double strap variation of this on my spdsl
http://www.badbean.com/cyclingstuff/spd_straps.htm
Works like a charm. Only put the straps on for sprint events, no need on the endurance stuff.
Simplified version of the answer....
Look Keo (or delta) will do fine
SPD SL will do fine
Speedplay road will do fine (if you have the correct shoes)
Avoid MTB pedals and Time RXS is you canFair summary?

I use Time RXS, did have 2 pairs but now down to one. They break very easily, broken 3 pairs which have been replaced fine but its still not ideal. Waiting for my last set to break again so that I can get a refund and change system.
Does anyone know if track speedplay pedals and cleats are interchangable with thier standard road ones?

Pedals are the same, the cleats have stronger springs so you can increase release tension.
-
• #164
Yeah that seems to be pretty much the summary gizmond.
I'll stay away from RXS and wanted a change anyway. I'm not exactly a powerhouse but as it happens, I came out of my time ATAC xs today and managed to slow down with one leg before I hit railings. More embarrassing than painful.
The strap to Keo thing is way too expensive and for my needs. I think I'll go with some SPD-SL for now. I can always get the Keo on my road bike or other fixed bike to test one day.

I feel obliged to say - before people get the idea that track cycling is the elite cousin of road cycling, that 99% of people won't need anything different from what they use on the road.
Get a typical pair of road pedals, do the tension up to the max (you may as well even if you're not likely push the pedals to their limits as you stop less often on the track), and unless you're planning on hitting the gym a few times a week, and only doing standing start races then any normal (reasonably-priced) road pedal will do the job
At Herne Hill, SPD-SL and Look Keos are probably the most popular.
-
• #166
Yeah, that's the impression I get JC. I knew that would be the case I just wanted to hear some opinions before I made the purchase. I do plan on getting to the gym regularly now, so maybe at some point I'll be glad to have the inconvenience of worrying about all this

I have had Speedplays on test for a year now and they are shite. Too many variables make them a pain in the arse to set-up and if you want to nudge them forward 2mm you have to take the top half off before you can get to the bottom screws. Very annoying.
After 1 year I never got my right foot comfortable.

Can anyone tell me if Look Keo's are worthwhile investing in for some track use? (Max 2's)
-
• #169
There's a whole thread here telling you they are good and popular, and there is even an off the peg solution if you eventually need security straps.
-
• #170
Fuck. I have nooooooooo idea why i put that up there. I apologise. I had been reading the other pedal thread in this section, and not paid attention to where i posted. Turns out, the information was within this one......
Numpty. I am. -

Probably at least two out of those three! not really needed with the wealth of shoe/pedal combos out there these days.
I use these now:
http://www.velodromeshop.org.uk/index.php?p=product&id=812^ these fuckers haven't even lasted a year without now having 2mm of play in the axles.
I thought something was up the other day when I was on the rollers doing revouts, weird knocking noise...Funny how my Keos of the same age are still tidy despite being used on the road all winter and therefore had more use, OK not starts but even so.
Bit pissed off really as I can't afford the faff of new pedals and shit again. Guess I will just ziptie straps to some Keo sprints when I can afford them :(
