Pedals for track

  • I was in Edinburgh at the weekend and saw Graeme Obrees hour record bike in the museum, it had his integrated pedal shoes on it. He basically butchered a Carnac shoe and bolted a pedal into the sole and then covered it all up in fibreglass so you are lower on your bike and can't pull your foot out and the whole assembly in more aero. Is there a reason this hasn't taken off? Not nessesary? To hard to adjust for foot angles? Outlawed by the UCI? Safety?

  • Probably at least two out of those three! not really needed with the wealth of shoe/pedal combos out there these days.

    I use these now:

  • I've wondered that before. With musclebag sprinters faffing around with strapping their clipless shoes in, and with those unsightly/un-aero straps flapping around - couldn't they just bolt their shoe down.

  • I suppose it's standardisation, flexibility and repairability...

  • Opinions on running clipless without float ?

I've been using the basic Look Keo's on the track for the past three years with the grey cleat, which I believe is the 'middle' cleat in terms of float. I haven't pulled out yet, but my feet do sometimes twist very slightly when applying pressure to the pedal.

The pedals are a bit knackered now, so going to replace. Unsure whether to go with the same pedal and zero float cleat, or try something new

  • Float is for people who have the wrong cleat angle. Get your cleat angle right. :-)

  • Personally i have some float on mine.

Only reason being that i decided to use no-float and went down to a session to sort them out. Multiple adjustments later they were still not right and my knees really hurt so I gave up.

Admittedly it didn't work because I am useless but it ended up that i was happier having some float rather than none.

  • I too have float on mine. Never tried non-float to be honest so wouldn't know what they are like

  • Why do you need your pedals to float?

You're cycling now James, not rowing.

yeah, you're quite clearly doing it wrong!

float works for me but only a bit.

  • Cleat float is for roadies.

  • Cleat float is for roadies.

    I ain't no roadie

  • Get some old school Dura ace SPDR with 0 float cleats.....sorted.

For the sprinters, use the same pedal and adapt the back claw to take a double strap and the upward action will actually tighten the grip on the cleat....

  • Yeah spd-r all the way. Though I have float in mine. Not sure it makes a great deal of difference?

  • The problem with recommending spd-r is that the choice of shoe is now extremely limited. Unless you are lucky like mike and find NOS carbon soled spd-r shoes in your LBS on offer. ffs.

  • Tis true....i still use my Nike Altea 2s which are great but getting a bit rough now...a nice pair of drilled out Bonts will do the job..

lol. You know I wear them all the time though and they will soon be ruined.
I will then have to try and source another pair :)

  • Good luck let me know if you can source any 45s. ;-)

  • Plumped for Ultegra SPD-SL with zero float cleats, with some nice new Shimano carbon soled shoes in the end.

Ratched the tension to max, and there's no way I'm going to pull out of these. Feel a lot more secure than I did in my old (and worn) Keo's

  • +1 on the Ultegra SPD-SL's plus a nice stiff shoe and you're away.

  • or you could be like Roy Van Den Burg and keep your BMX pedals and shoes...

    wrong.

  • SPDs?

  • Wtf

  • They are Shimano DX Shoes; teamed with PDM647 Pedals
