Mountain biker Markus Stöckl set new world speed record of 164.95kph late last month on the gravel slopes of a volcano in Nicaragua.
The 36-year-old Austrian downhiller is the director and owner of the MS Evil Racing Team. His new record is for stock mountain bikes on a gravel surface, and it improved by 1kph the previous record set by Frenchman Eric Barone nine years ago.
Stöckl completed his run wearing an aero helmet and full body, bright red aero suit as he blazed down the Cerro Negro volcano.
He'd previous set a speed record on snow of 210kph in 2007.http://www.cyclingnews.com/news/stockl-sets-new-speed-record

Have just found this thread, and have done some digging through my google maps/docs record of my rides. Very suprised to see that my top speed was on my normal commute, which google's mytracks app thinks I managed a top speed of 29.72mph, and an average moving speed of 16.1mph (47.84kph top and 25.97kph average). That only shaved 2 minutes off of my commute, I can only suspect that I hit nearly all green lights on the way.
Thats SS, not FG though.

The older I get the more sensible I get, but I want to hit a recorded 50mph at some point. I've got to mid-40s with a computer, but no more.

Well all you'd need is a steeper slope ....or alternatively, a cliff would work.
Do the rules say anything about needing to survive the run ? Do you need to be alive to collect the prize from Norris McQuirter and Roy Castle for it to count ?

There's nothing in the rules about the wheels touching the ground, right?
I need a C 130, a Halfords BSO and a parachute...

Forum project. This with a DH fork upgrade.
Sparky to ride it.

You can ride it down this Sparky. There's a river to cushion your finish. ;)

That helmet looks.....familiar....

Right, forum, cobble together a bike and a pointy helmet and I will pilot us to victory.

I've topped out at 52mph. It felt very, very fast.
On the flat, I did a 10TT on the A1 with a monster tailwind - I average out at about 27mph for five miles on a 72 inch gear. Problem was, the course was an out-and-back. The headwind for the last five miles was truly awful. Still held it at 18mph but nearly puked at the end.

A bit of nerve and a run down Titsey Hill and you can cross that off the list no problem.

76kph last weekend... on aerobars. Glad I didn't have the 808 on the front.

I done Titsey hill brakless and nearly shit myself, the drivers I overtook also shit them selves.
I've hit 51.1mph on the road on a MTB with 2inch tyres which was a fuck ton of fun but my dad still managed to come creeping up and overtake me on his 30 year old Holdsworth with a fag in his mouth!

Homosexual bicycle acrobatics are no big and not clever.
Someone could have had an eye out.

Have only been measuring speed since switching to 48x19 which is quite spinny. Have never broken 30mph on that ratio...think 29.4 or so is my best,

I was wondering how long till someone made that joke.

I think I may have hit 50mph, but I didn't have a computer. That was coming down Tourmalet. Quite intense. But I won't be happy until I see it on a tiny LCD screen.

47mph! years ago when I was actually fit, never ridden a road bike before, but was good at doing 10million rpm on a SS mtb. borrowed a mates ribble for an afternoon. road was about as flat and level as you could want, dunno about wind, wasn't much of it.
normally I'd be first to crit the cycle computer, but it took A LOT to get that high. normally on the flat I can only sustain about 25-27 for any period of time.
If you can walk a 9mph average over hills for 68 miles, I believe the SAS have a job for you.
