Riding in a bunch down into Brighton, two of us were spinning madly on 42x16 and, according to riders with computers we were nudging 35mph before the other fixed rider's chain came off. We slowed down at that point.
Ask Fixedwheelnut though - I think he's hit 40mph on fixed.
With a freewheel, as has been said, you're limited by the road and your nerves. I've never broken the 45mph barrier but hit 44.7 on Westerham Hill years ago.

There are TDF descents clocked at 70mph. Those nutters on glaciers on MTBs have hit 120+mph.

Guilty as charged. :-)
Sprinters like Mark Cavendish will hit 80 km/h in a sprint on the road. That's 50 mph. Downhill it's easy to top those speeds, you just need a clear road and the balls to let it go.
i need to test this theory ! sounds fun.

Just don't think about what could happen if you puncture...

Faster than you.

i dont think it's possible to go faster then 40mph on a regular upright bike in the open air. too much resistence.
People who say they went faster are lying IMO or just have a faulty speedo.
For a while I became quite obsessed with how fast I could ride and how long my commute would take so.
Downhill, richmond park anticlock, fixed 67gi 35mph
Flat, fixed Herne Hill Velodrome, 92gi 38mph (cross wind not tail)
A4 (Talgarth road) My Hybrid commuter flat road drafing an hgv 41mph
Downhill hybrid again just after ditchling beacon toward Brighton 48mphI agree with the wind resistance being a big barrier to fast speeds.

I read an interview with one of the motorbike camera men who ride the TdF and he said he'd once clocked Robbie McEwan doing 120kph down a hill.
120kph + Lycra = Massive skin fail

Faster than you.
yes, but that is downhill

42 mph on a gear bike and down Finchely road (down hill)... got told off by the police...

I hope you were not in a 30mph area, otherwise that would be ILLEGAL.
Not true, unless in a bylaw area, such as Richmond park. Speed limits on normal highways do NOT apply to bicycles :-)

yikes! this thread makes me feel very very sloooooow...haha. i'd better get spinning!

Paul that dragon ride is when your tyre was going flat too.

About five penguins per antelope, that was in the sticks though so it's equivalent of about three hoodies per hipster in London or 12 shoe shiners per bowler hats in old money.

28-30mph on the flat on my fixed, Car I overtook was showing 25mph on the speedo so I assume I was doing roughly that to get past them, i've clocked 40mph plus downhill passing traffic, that was on my old mtb years back, I say plus as I stopped looking at the speedo once I realised how fast I was going! Oh and on my snowboard i've hit 51mph through a slalom course speed trap where it intersected with a red run I was on, now that felt fast!

I am assuming you mean on the flat as 30mph is slow downhill.
I have never measured it though so will do when I next put my GPS on my bike as I am interested to see. -

Just out of interest - what cycle computers are you peeps using? Was thinking about purchasing one the other day but decided against as there are other things I should probably be spending money on. But now I want one again. I'm such a big fat materialist...
Yay - lunchtime ruck...
